Hello all, I'm going to Oman as a Fuel Systems Tech with DynCorp. Anyone have any info or advice on what to expect? Thanks!

Oman...not too bad, not as good as say the UAE. Just don't get complacent. Watch your back just like anywhere else and you'll have a good time.

Are you happy with your package, would you mind sharing some details? Just curious.

Thumrait isn't bad, Salalah is 45-60 minutes away, but you are in the middle of the monsoon season so don't bother for another month or so. I spent a year and a half there as an avionics tech and the guys were pretty good. Always have a headache here and there with personnel, but it is just something to deal with. The work week is awesome; saturday to thursday usually from 0630-1330 or so. Lockheed had better pay and benefits, but that is why Dyncorp undercut the contract. Keep in mind you have the APO system there and you can order anything from the states. I arrived with 2 suitcases and left with 13 boxes! Hit me up with any other questions, I am more than happy to answer them

Thumrait was pretty nice, as far as "just outside of the AOR" bases go. I was on the last USAF aircrew to transit Thumrait. The Brit C-17s followed us out a couple of days later. A lot of British contractors on the base, and they are awesome! Stick with them, and they'll be glad to show you around, and keep you well stocked with...er..."beverages". The Omani nationals that I worked with there were really good too. Enjoy your time over there, and yes, PACK LIGHTLY! |
