Yesterday when President Bush flew to CT, it was not aboard the usual VC-25, but on a VC-32 (757.)
Just curious as to if anyone knew why? Runway length? |

| Short hop; why waste the big bird and all of the fuel? |

I was trying to come up with a witty remark that involved riding a bicycle, but..... |

Yep...essentially an out-n-back. When I was living in Dayton we'd see the presidential 757s fly into WPAFB quite often. And if you noticed, there was a second 757 parked in the background as Dubya was exiting. Always good to have a spare! |

| Wonder why he's not using his brand new C-41? That's the BBJ that was converted per his request. |

I thought that one was assigned to CinC SOCOM? Seems like Gen. Tommy Franks made a remark about it during his retirement speech. It may also have been deployed somewhere and wasn't available. Besides, if there's only one individual aircraft it probably won't get used. Secret Service protocol requires a backup aircraft (of the same type, I think) on any presidential trip, no matter how short. |

| Yes, that is true, it can be used for the CinCs, but it was outfitted as a prez plane. Gf's uncle worked on the comm suite for it. |

Did the 757 do any abroad trips?
Or is that for the 2 747-200 only? |

They have in fact been used for overseas missions but with only a 4000 nm range it may need to stop for gas and snacks, especially for Mid East destinations. Perhaps at Ramstein or Rhein Main? Colin Powell has used it numerous times on his international trips. |

But isn't the 757 designed for international routes, to stop in transit is not the policy of boeing, what modifications does it have?
I remember that AFM wrote something about it, I'll have to dig that up! |

| The BBJ is a 737 not a 757. |

My 4000 nm range quote came from www.GlobalSecurity.org. It may be an unclassified number. Wouldn't surprise me if there's extra fuel tanks for greater range.
I'd think Boeing has no say as to whether or not a stop is required. They build the plane to the spec outlined in the contract. If you're thinking of landing rights, I would suspect diplomatic decorum would allow landing at friendly airports for refueling purposes and if that's not the case, refueling at friendly military bases, starting with US/NATO and working down, is also an option. And if THAT wasn't possible, the president can authorize the use of the 747s for someone other than himself and the Secret Service would then coordinate aerial refueling with the Air Force.
These are all extreme examples. If necessary most Mid East and African destinations can be reached with one refueling stop at any US or allied military base in Europe.
And Eagle is correct...the BBJ is a 737 albeit with a much greater range than the standard commercial variant. |

The thing is I wasn't talking about the BBJ, I know it's a 737
I check the 757 thing out. |
