Something here smells funny. If he was in the back, why was he asked to open the canopy? Also I know you can overide the gear, but once again, tough to do with WOW and from the backseat. They are hidding something. Could it be because he was a B/G? Glad it wasn't my ride, at least he wasn't told oh I forgot Sir, also hit that red pickle button there.

Thoughts anyone?

Sorry, if anyone is lost this is about the F-16 at Nevatim in the news.

If you read the one of the Israeli papers they say he was fiddling with the pilots ejector seat handle. Thats more worrying.

Asif, I'm confused. Is "fiddling" a aircrew term or Israeli terminology? LMAO

The actual entry went as follows:

Haaretz.com wrote:

At the end of the flight, during which Tzur was shown the capabilities of the plane, the pilot brought it to rest on the tarmac; Tzur, who was supposed to pull the lever controlling the ejector seat of the pilot, and the passenger, who accidentally pulled the lever controlling the wheels. According to air force sources, the damage to the plane was minimal and no one was injured.

Hey Asif,

That's different then what we have on the home page. It said he was "and I won't use the word fiddling....LOL" trying to open the canopy. I hope to heck he was in the back seat.......but he can't open it from there............Maybe he's going to lead the raid on Iran!.....Sorry had to get that in.

The thing that gets me, why would the front seater want a general pulling on his ejector seat handle... Fiddling my a** Did he piss this guy off by doing one to may rolls Wink

So the backseater has no access to the canopy controls? Will need to revise this if that is the case?? My Hebrew is crud, so may have got it wrong in translation.

Hello Asif and Purplehaze,

I'm new here and would like to take a shot at this. I'm sure they are refering to the ARM/DEARM lever for the seat. Depending on seat adjustment, the landing gear handle is just left of the lever. To DEARM the seat you lift the lever to the up position, hence Landing gear handle up gears going up. Though Weight on Wheels (WOW Switch) should have prevented this.
Disoriented from flight (Which happened to me a few times)or unfamiliar with Cockpit locations could be the cause. Just my 2 cents worth, Thanks.

Why were there no pins installed before opening the canopy? I know that sometimes pilots crack open the canopy a bit but usually there are pins installed at MLG ones are think it was just the nose that went up or actually down in this case?

Maybe this is a dumb question, but doesn't the plane have some kind of sensor that notices when the plane is standing on wheels and should therefore prevent gear retraction while still on the ground? Maybe this is way too logical?

Yes its called a weight on wheels switch, and usually the jet will not let you put the handle up with WOW. However unlikely, backseater could have overode them with the downlock release switch, (also right next to the landing gear handle) and the gear could have gone up. More plausible is the fact that both wow switches could have either been out of rig (.010 to.020 gap when acft is on jacks) or both switches could failed.

This unwanted gear retraction has occured on the ground several times by maintenance crews, and off the top of my head there is two ops checks, main landing gear brake ops check and trailing edge flap switch confidence ops check, that has a warning proceded by a downlock release and handle up while on the ground with the gear pins in. MX crews have either read it wrong and pulled the pins even though the warning tells you that if pull the pins your F'd, or they were just in a hurry and wernt paying attention and maybe did an ops check without safe for mx.
