WASHINGTON — Both the head of the Air Force and the Air Force secretary have been asked to submit their resignations, FOX News confirms.

Air Force Chief of Staff Michael Moseley, the service's top uniformed officer, and Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne will resign by the end of the day, two sets of sources tell FOX News.

Defense Secretary Gates has publicly identified a number of problems recently with the Air Force, including last year's accidental flight of nuclear weapons, a top ranking official who ran into contract problems, and his speech at at the Air Force academy describing the Air Force's sluggishness to step up its readiness.

FOX News' Jennifer Griffin contributed to this report.

More likely they were fired but allowed to resign. Too bad Gen McPeak couldn't have gotten the axe back in the 90's, he in my opinion was the worst AF Chief of Staff ever.

Sounds like they had to fall on their swords because of the incident up at Minot. It's also widely know that Moseley was at odds with the Pentagon about the numbers of F/A-22's. I wonder if that had anything to do with this?

I wonder if Mosely is still going to speak at Holloman tomorrow? Like to hear that speech if he is.

Moseley didn't have a whole lot longer left on the job anyway, did he?

Not really but it never looks good to leave early.

well lets see what has happened in the last year.

1. Nuclear surerity lost for 5 hours with improper transport of cruise missiles.
2. Nuclear missile componants found to have been improperly shipped to Taiwan
3. CSAF implicated in improper contract dealings with the Thunderbirds. later exhonerated by SecAF.
4. AFMC officer tells media against DOD policy that regardless of what superiors say, more F-22A's will have to be purchased.
5. SecDEF telling AF academy cadets that they have to worry less about their careers and more about the service and the people that they lead.
6. and now 1 of 3 nuclear capable Bomb wings fails the Nuclear Surerity Inspection.
and to a lesser extent the grounding of the whole F-15 fleet in which we had to rely on Canada to provide ASA for Alaska.

The USAF has been asked to do too much for far too long. I know it the same thing ....."do more with less"...well this has been going on now for at least 20 years. It's time for it to stop, and the way to do it is to complain to Congress.

Ya, a lot is happening right now especially with an upcoming election.
I find it real disturbing anytime something like this happens. I just hope no focus is lost supporting the personnel in the AOR.

Yes Vark you are correct.

What really pisses me off is the “Pork Barrel” politics. Sen Byrd was able to open a US Coast Guard Station in WV. I had no idea we might have a threat from the Ohio River

This one slipped right by me … answers some questions now on a recent AWC CC change.

Seems like the top officials took appropriate action? But I guess when big things happen congress wants to see more dicks slammed into the dirt all the way down the food chain.

Reuters wrote:
WASHINGTON, April 17 (Reuters) - Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne disciplined a top Pentagon official and four others involved with a $50 million Thunderbirds air show contract after an investigation showed the deal was "tainted with improper influence," the service said on Thursday.

Wynne took unspecified administrative action against Maj. Gen. Stephen Goldfein, who was commander of the Air Warfare Center at Nellis Air Force Base at the time the contract was awarded to a Pennsylvania-based company, Strategic Message Solutions, the Air Force said in a statement.

Goldfein has been vice director of the Pentagon's Joint Staff since last February. In that job, he oversees Joint Staff activities, including administration, budget, information technology and security.

Wynne's action came after an investigation by the Defense Criminal Investigative Service of the Department of Defense Inspector General (DODIG) "found the contract was tainted with improper influence, irregular contracting practices and preferential treatment for SMS.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Michael Moseley had also been linked to the deal in various news reports, but an Air Force spokesman said the Pentagon investigation did not find any wrongdoing by the top uniformed officer in the service.

"There was no action taken against Gen. Moseley. There was no finding by the DODIG that implicated Gen. Moseley," Capt. Tom Wenz told Reuters.

Wynne took action against Goldfein and two others, and referred action against two additional service members to their chain-of-command for their role in the contract.

Wenz declined to say what action had been taken against Goldfein, but said administrative action could range from a verbal reprimand to a formal letter of admonishment.

The Air Force canceled the $50 million contract to help publicize the work of the Thunderbirds after the losing bidder, Arizona-based Standing Room Only, filed a formal protest with the Government Accountability Office, saying it lost the bid although its cost was nearly half that of the winning bidder.
I am deeply disappointed that our high standards were not adhered to in this case," Wynne said in a statement. "This is not how the Air Force does business and we are taking steps to ensure this doesn't happen again."

The disciplinary action comes as the Air Force is defending itself against a higher-profile protest filed by Boeing Co (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) after it lost a $35 billion contract to Northrop Grumman Corp (NOC.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and its European subcontractor EADS (EAD.PA: Quote, Profile, Research).

Boeing argued in its protest that the Air Force improperly steered that contract to Northrop. (Reporting by Andrea Shalal-Esa; Editing by Andre Grenon)

The nuclear Buff incident definitely takes the cake … the “world” should have been fired in that one.

Sometimes I think we need to create a new position for a crusty old retired chief to oversee everything
