Haha!! I remember that one. I think it was 77th that did it. Or was it the 79th? Can't remember.

That's what happend when you take a blonde out flying.. Razz

Had one incedent in one of our two-seaters. A female officer that was out for an incentive ride. She managed to put the gear down at about 500KIAS . Don't ask me how she did it.. To all fortune the jet landed safely. It was not my jet, but I was told the CC was plenty pissed..

You are misinformed Snide. The linebadge did not get caught on the handle.

During installation of the left sidewall fairing on a windy Nellis day, the 1/4" ratcheting wrench and #2 phillips head apex got jammed between the sidewall fairing and canopy jettison handle on 77 FS acft 4045. When the wrench dislodged...BOOM! The event was witnessed by several people on the line, including the P1 who was about 20 feet away. The canopy flew directly into a 40 (I think) knot wind, cleared the vertical stab by several feet (according to witnesses), and landed about 8 feet behind the turkey feathers.

Was the pin pulled? No. Were the buttons pushed? No. How did this happen? I don't know. Nellis Egress shop didn't know. Luke Egress shop didn't know. Shaw Egress shop didn't know. After several accident/incident reports and investigations, and interviews with all involved, the Air Force doesn't know. I never read the final report, but I know for a fact that nobody was ever found at fault.

For gee whiz purposes: hearing loss was limited to about 4 hours, not 4 days. Several nicknames were spawned from this incident, but "Canopy Jack Poland" wasn't one of them. Jettison Jack (JJ for short) was the one that stuck. There were others, but JJ is still my favorite.

I know this is an old thread. I would have replied to this sooner, but I just stumbled on it tonight while surfing the web. I know this incident pretty well. In fact, I still have the canopy panel with my name on it. Everyone who helped rebuild the jet, including the commander (Colonel K.), signed it and presented it to me at the end of the TDY. We rebuilt that ENTIRE cockpit, from the airframe up, in less that 30 days. Its first flight after we rebuilt it and brought it out of cann status was the cross-country back to Shaw...code1.

Snide, if you have any more questions, just yell...loudly.

Sincerely,

JJ

The film clip is wicked! Cool Although I always thought it'd get much higher than that.

I have a friend who was on a cadet PDT during the summer of '06 at Laughlin about to get an incentive ride in one of the T-6's. They had been stressed that they could only touch 3 things in the cockpit, those being the 100% Oxygen, the ejection sequencer and the seat arming switch. He was suited up and headed to the line when a T-6 taking the runway for T/O with a female cadet in the back. Her pilot told her to arm the seat but instead she grabbed the canopy jettison and shattered the canopy with the explosive ribbon. Needless to say all the rides were cancelled. He said she showed back up with glass still in the flightsuit after visiting the hospital. I'm not familiar with the T-6s cockpit but my friend says there is virtually no way to mix the two up. Apparently the girl has not lived this down and everyone still calls her "Twist and Pull."
