On this picture you see John Vandebosch getting ready for his display. I noticed he has a yellow ear plug in his right ear (and probably also in his left Smile ). What's the function of this plug? To shut out all the jet noise while making himself ready for take-off? And do they come out before they actually take off, how else can they here their radio?

The earplugs cut out the high frequency noise. This is what is most damaging to your ears.

All USAF pilots I've worked with put in earplugs before flight, and in my opinion the reason is simple: During high-speed, high-G maneuvering, cockpit noise in the F-16 can reach 120db+. Those radios have a volume control, and it can go pretty high Very Happy

The USAF ground crews are required to wear double hearing protection when within 50 feet of running aircraft as well. If you are wearing a communication head-set and someone else on the system lets their mic fall off, it gets loud instantly!

With the earplugs in you can still hear through your headset very well. Without them in it's almost impossible to hear anything but engine squeal and rumble.

Huh?...........

What?.........

Say again?.............

Does the term "significant hearing shift" sound familiar?
