How much would you say your airplane model collection is worth?

Jake

How true....but be that as it may, why let a perfectly working flight helmet sit on a shelf? It should be worn! Very Happy

That's very nice thought indeed and I FULLY agree... Once I get it, I'm certainly open for suggestions and offers if anyone wants to take me for a flight... *hint hint* Crazy Pilot Salute Hahahahaha....

Next time you find yourself in Montgomery county Texas, look me up and I'll give you a ride in a Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. "Lights and Sirens" Not as much fun as a Falcon ride but definetly a pucker factor involved

In Jan 2000 I retired from the Air Reserve and they gave me my HGU-55P complete with mask! It is for use on a KC-135R model so it has a early model dual visor for mounting flash goggles on them. When it was issued it had the cheap cup type ear phones installed. I took the molded leather earphones from my first HGU-55P and installed them in it! Wink I was also given my all white helmet by my Air Guard unit when we changed to the HGU-55P and then given my HGU-55P when I left that unit! Rolling Eyes Both my oldest nephews are the proud owners of those helmets! I kept my last one. I also have a size 7 7/8 head which may account for the gifts!! Embarassed

The shadow box and plaque in the last pic, were also retirement gifts from my Reserve Squadron. Cool

For buyin helmets at reasonable price, you can't beat ebay - i got a couple, one unissued, and you can buy them in component parts. Chap in Taiwan seems to have various navy painted ones. They do cost a few hundred dollars, and always a bit of a risk.

Don't mean to drudge up old posts but just thought I'd answer the original question. One of the main reasons we keep the helmets painted in the primer grey look is because if there is an incident then the helmet can be examined by the experts and we can determine if something went wrong. Paint transfer onto the helmet can tell us if the pilot rubbed against something during ejection etc. Also, the color is meant to camouflage the helmet during an evasion situation. It sticks out in desert environs but for water and most other environs it hides it quite well. Also, if painted it would be a real pain in the tail to clean and the soft scrub would probably wear some of the paint off.

All that aside, that's a nice dual visor kit with PLZT mount you got there. I still have nightmares of inspecting those things at Barksdale back in the '90s. The visor tracks are a real nightmare to keep aligned and the visors subsiquently are always popping out of the tracks.
