I see that LM has developed an IRST for the SH and Raytheon has the ATFLIR. I was wondering if the two systems were competitive or respective to A2A or A2G operations. Considering the loadout on the pdf front page, I would think the IRST is for A2A and ATFLIR for A2G. Interesting that the IRST is a combo sensor with 330 gallon fuel tank compared to operational configuration issues with the ATFLIR (port side tank view).

I know I'm opening a can of worms with this comment, but here goes....

Nothing says you can't do your job without extra bags than building your sensors into them.

I'm guessing those will be non-jettisonable then? Very Happy

From that document, it looks like they are using the same sensor as was on the F-14D? I don't know why else you'd cite the 200,000 flight hours. Or are they just saying "hey, we made the AN/AAS-42, we know what we're doing"?

Taking an already luke warm airframe performance jet and putting an IRST/centerline fuel tank on it as form-function for air to air has to be the height of desperation. "Look we have IRST too". Where it can be a nose job a la F-16, standard equipment on Eurofighter, RuTech etc. Laughing
