Ladies and gentlemen...
A few moments ago, after her last flight in 1993... Avro Vulcan XH558 took to the skies on her first test flight! 14 years of restoration work and lottery money has led to this moment.
The delta lady flies once more!
Congratulations to the Vulcan Operating Company and the Vulcan to the Sky trust for all their hard work and achieving the impossible!

It is the first time an aircraft of the Vulcan's complexity has been given an extended overhaul on such a scale and then returned to flight, meeting all current aviation standards, said the Vulcan to the Sky Trust.
With a characteristic screeching roar, the plane rose majestically into the sky to a cheer from watching supporters, sponsors and engineers before banking to the left.
Just over 20 minutes later, to widespread relief, co-pilots Al McDicken and David Thomas landed it back on a Leicestershire airstrip.
Speaking immediately after the flight, Squadron Leader McDicken said: "She was an absolute delight, every bit as good as I can remember. It was a tremendous privilege to fly it again. We were suitably aroused.
"What a statement for those people who made that aircraft all those years ago.
"It's 25 years almost to the day that I last flew one. It was just wonderful."
Engineers had failed to restore the Vulcan in time for a flypast over London earlier this year to commemorate the Falklands War.
Witnessing today's test flight, Dr Robert Pleming, chief executive of the Vulcan to the Sky Trust, said he felt a "huge sense of achievement" at finally getting the plane off the ground.
"We finally did it after so many ups and downs," he said. "It's the British bulldog spirit."
Among the pilots to have worked on the project is Martin Withers, who piloted a Vulcan for the first of the famous Black Buck missions during the Falklands War.
Describing the significance of today's test flight, he said: "This is the only one of the V-bombers (Victor, Valiant and Vulcan) to play such an important role during the Cold War as our prime nuclear deterrent, in good enough condition that you could reasonably expect to be airborne again."

| I was waiting for this one for a long time. Glad to see her flying again. Now, I just hope I can fly into England sometime when I know she's gonna be flying. Great job bringing back a legend! |

A great sight! The team state that there are enough spares including engines, to keep her flying for ten years. (They got a few hundred tons of spares when they got the aircraft).
Amazing to think that every single bolt/screw/rivet was inspected/passed or replaced. All bombing gear was removed and modern digital avionics were installed like GPS, so she is very different under the skin. The pilots certified to fly her were some of the same guys who undertook the Black Buck missions in `82.
I for one am definitely going to see her fly!! |

I've seen many airlift crews with that many hours on type. Bomber crews are not far behind, especially back in the old days of SAC and RAF Bomber Command. |

Ah, thanks TC, missed you guys out! You airlift types on the Mighty C-17 can stretch your legs and have all the creature comforts I imagine Those Vulcan crews didn`t have room to scratch their a$$!  |

Well...not ALL of the creature comforts. The cargo compartment can get cold in flight til you crank up the heat, and we have an oven that you could barely reheat a McDonald's hamburger in, but other than that I'm not complaining. Hell, at least I can stand up to take a pi$$. I know the fighter guys are saying "D@mn we hate you TC!"
I'd love to get a ride with the Vulcan Demo team though. Check out some of those old videos on YouTube. One of them, IIRC, was the 1986 Bruntingthorpe show. Holy Sierra, what a takeoff!...which is coincidentally the same thing I think everytime I go in the -17. |

Cockpit in the Vulcan isn't that bad, im a fat bugger and I can fit in it just fine
Just hope you are the pilot or co-pilot..... the backseaters don't have Martin-Bakers!

Getting in and out isn`t a problem I agree Andy, it still felt claustrophobic whilst in it for me at least!
TC, had the pleasure of seeing the Vulcan display as a kid, the noise was incredible!
Can`t wait for e repeat. |
