Hi I'm new and I need some help because I'm looking for a picture that appeared back around 1980 in Jay Miller's 3-part article on the F-111 in Wings/Airpower.

It shows a model of an aircraft which appeares to be a VG variation on the basic F-16 fuselage shape.

I don't know it ... I've heard in another forum of this "What if" project!! ... and as I've read in the "versions-page":

"Four different wing planforms for General Dynamics' Model 401 were researched back in 1972 - straight, swept, variable and delta. The variable-geometry wing was rejected because of weight/complexity."

Maybe someone can help, bacause Idon't know that magazine and this VG-version ! ... would be great !!

Thanks in advanve, Deino Very Happy

Variable geometry on an F-16? Where the hell did they want to put all the hydraulics and swinging mecahisms? Confused

I believe it's in Gunston's book as well, circa 1983. I can have a look for you, and scan it if I see it in there, but the book is at home...and I'm at work! ack!....so gimme some time.

I looked throug my 80's books as well. Only strange Viper I found was one shown below.

Taken from "Jet Warplanes - The Twenty First Century" by Michael [Link pending approval] Taylor, Copyright Bison Books Ltd, 1986

Caption reads as follows:

"Another of many artist's conceptions of a possible future supersonic vectored-thrust fighter, this time with an F-16 influence to the airframe configuration but with an engine layout suited to the role and outrigger wheels retracting into mid-wing fairings."

I had a good laugh looking at some of the "promising fighters" that were to rule the skies by 2000! Maybe we should start a new forum - "Viper Firends and Foes that Never Were"

CODE ONE magazine dated July 97 has a good article on F-16 evolution and some interesting delta wings.

There was an F-16-based VTOL study, I think it was codenamed E-7? If I can find the pics I will scan and post them.
