This may be old data, but this was how it was supposed to work.

Once a target was locked on the radar, a TD box much like on the HUD would appear on the visor so that the pilot could track the bogey even when outside the FOV of the HUD

A fixed pipper was also available so the pilot could visually designate a target by looking at it and pressing the deignate button.

Most common application of this is with high off-boresight missile (AIM-9X)...can look left/high/right, designate, and fire, without the target ever entering the HUD FOV.

It's my understanding from some former pups who work on JHMCS currently that there are tranceivers on the helmet and in the cockpit. When the pilot straps in part of the start up procedures is hold his/her nugget against the hadrest for a few seconds while the helmet and HUD acquire each other. It's kind of like the spatial orientation logorithms used in virtual reality video games.

Once the helmet and HUD are linked, fire control is automatically slaved to the helmet whenever the pilot selects a target via the helmet. If there's a hiccup or failure inflight then the HUD remains the default.

Any JHMCS qual'd drivers care to comment?
