the box at the laft hand is the intercomm amplifier, which sets the volume for the headset

that cable is the comm cord, it attaches to the aircraft, and on the other end, it attaches to the Crew Chief's Head set. Basically, it's the means pilots and groundcrew communicate when the engine is running.
