Mishap at Edwards AFB, aircraft #88-0456 a heavily modified block 42. It was flying a test mission with an, at the time, one of a kind Pratt and Whitney F100-PW229. It is believed there was a compressor stall followed by a turbine shell out. The pilot failed to get the gear down and landed on the belly. [USAF photo]

It was something else kicking and twisting panels to get them to lock down right on this one after this insident. I was the assistant crew chief on this jet when this happened. As I recall, it was a Canadian Pilot Test flying this one at this time.

I was the DCC of 456 at Edwards AFB back in 1994-96. Then later I went to phase.

This aircraft was never the same after this... It would often fail subsequent PDC's. I always hated Debriefing the pilots that flew this one. But the worst debriefing was usually on the "Red and White" Viper piles after we merged.

The pilot got a medal for landing it. And when we got the plane back from depot it still had dirt in it.

88-0456 was rebuilt by the 649 CLSS at Hill AFB (OO-ALC) and continues to fly today. dca
