My baby

This was my first and only jet at Eglin. I started out as the assistant under a guy we called "JAFO". Once he retired I took over as DCC as a SRA. My assistant was A1C Cindy Pratt. We made a good team. I left her (1123) in 1989 on my way to Korea. Ken Goldsby (at Eglin from 1985 to 1989)

removed gun

Most of the guns (and ammo drums) were removed from the test F-16s at Edwards. Instrumentation recorders were installed in the gun-drum bay. a plate covered the muzzle port. The 16s that needed 20mm Vulcan cannon had the instrumentation installed on the centerline station instead of a fuel tank. Aside: The test aircraft with the centerline pod-mounted instrumentation packages were MUCH easier to work on. The gun-drum mounted packages required about 100 screws and several antennas be removed for pre-and post-flights. Crew Chief on the 16s at Eddy's Airplane Patch '88-'90, primarily -688 and -064. Retrained as a Flight Engineer on C-5s and later EC-130s.

NOSE ART

Air brushed nose art and clear coated with enamal. Paramount Pictures wanted to do there part for the wartime effort and wanted to paint nose art on all the acft at Edwards AFB. I drew the picture and gave it to the studio`s artist and he doctored it up a little bit and there you have it. I helped do the airbrushing also. JR,the crew chief.

Gun question

Most test aircraft have their guns removed to make room for additional avionics. No need for guns in a test mission... unless of course you're testing guns! dl

During my first assignment in the USAF and to Edwards AFB. 1987-91 She was my 3rd F-16 as a crew dog. I was an ADCC on 0088 for about 2 years. She was 1 of the first 4 chase planes to be painted this way and a C-1 flyer. I PCS'ed to Ramstein AB, GM in 1991. I PCS'ed back to Edwards in 94. As far as I know she is at DM now!

I believe the F-16C tail was retrofitted as part of the ALQ-165 Advanced Self-Protection Jammer test program (note also antennas on the intake sides). The enlarged vertical fin base of the C was intended to house the ASPJ LRUs internally. ASPJ was cancelled by DoD and the Koreans are the only ones using it in the F-16.

-118, -119, -120, and -1176 were C/D models, mostly with block 25/40 avionics during late 80's.

600 gal fuel tanks were initially developed for IAF, supposedly. -0064 (one of the birds I worked on) was used at the time for foreign military sales avionics tests. (late 80s)

-550 was the structural bird when I was at "Eddy's" airplane patch. Lots of unusual loads and vibration tests. Had problems with AIM-7s falling off of the wing during flight test in late '80's. Later fixed

This was my jet from late 95 to 99. I had at one time, 3 jets at Edwards, but 359 has always been my favorite. It is a block 30 w/block 50 avionics and motor, GE-129. It still retains the block 40/50 prototype bulged MLG doors, but never received the heavy weight gear mod. It was also a spin chute jet. TSgt Mike Valdez

Scott A. Gandy (Elvis)

This airplane experienced a engine nozzle fail in the open position. The pilot steered it away from So. Ogden and ejected. The airplane then skidded across all four lanes of I-84.
