Sadly when Cannon AFB, NM, closes this great squadron will probably go as well. At the moment the 523 FS at Cannon AFB and the 80 FS at Kunsan AB, ROK, are the last active duty Block-30 units. During the last couple of years they have gone from "jack-of-all-trades" fighters to precision attackers as these two units have been up-dated with the AN/AAQ-14 target pods from the two-podded LANTIRN system, enabeling them to employ laser guided weapons These birds have also seen the introduction of the new breed of GPS weapons like the JDAM and JSOW. In regard to the 523 FS F-16s, they will be distributed to ANG/AFRC units when Cannon AFB closes.
