FYI / FWIW, in his paper about inventing the F-35 strikefighter, Dr. Bevilaqua had some interesting charts and illustrations accompanying his discussion of the various trades (trade-offs / trade studies) that went into Lockheed Martin's preliminary designs of what became the X-35.
Take an F-16, stir in A-7, add dollop of F-117 & gob of F-22, sprinkle with AV-8B, stir well, then bake. Whaddya get? An F-35.
