My uncle and my father never referred to their aircraft as ‘she’. Certainly ships, other stuff perhaps...not fighters. Nose art was a remembrance of something longed for, or home, or a talisman, or a good luck charm or a crew or pilot identity — not necessarily the aircraft. In my experience, ‘she’ is an awkward reference, and never used. The females I flew with never referred to the aircraft that way, nor did/do my wife or two daughters.

Thinking about it some more, I would also offer that the general reverence or affection represented by 'she' harkens back to a time when one was assigned at tail number that was your aircraft. It was the one you (almost) always flew. Similarly. it was the tail number that ones crew chief was responsible for. Those days were over many decades ago. Hence, that kind of man-to-machine reference doesnt develop anymore. You fly the tail number assigned to you on the flight schedule for the day. Different 'relationship' with the jet...

This is the same display but generally from a longer distance plus formation with P-51s.
