That's interesting, I remember hearing that VMFA-501 was disbanded a few years ago. Nice to see them reenter the fleet 8)

-35B is unveiled (SLIDESHOW) February 24, 2012

http://www.nwfdailynews.com/articles/sl ... d-35b.html

"...“All that we have learned from the last 100 years and all that we have done to plan for our future has led to this aircraft, the F-35B,” Stevens said. “It is the world’s only fifth-generation supersonic combat aircraft that can also hover and takeoff and land virtually anywhere a Marine operates, and Marines get called to action everywhere.”

The F-35B displayed at Friday’s rollout ceremony will be flown by Lt. Col. David Berke, commander of the Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501, once the Department of Defense gives the go-ahead for the Joint Strike Fighters to take off.

Berke said he anticipated that happening soon.

“We’re getting very close to being ready to fly these aircraft very soon,” Berke said after the ceremony. “The pilots and the maintainers have taken advantage of all the opportunities here to get ready to fly this airplane. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Berke, who has flown F-18s, F-16s and the F-22 Raptor, said there is a significant jump in technology with the F-35.

“I will tell you that the transition from something like an F-18 or a Harrier, which is the predominate aircraft that we have flown in the Marine Corps, to the F-35 is a significant change,” Berke said. “Fundamentally, obviously, flying is flying; how the aircraft maneuvers through the airspace is similar.

“How we operate with the sensors, how the sensors fuse together for a common picture and how that information is transmitted to the Marines on the ground is dramatically different,” he added. “We’re trying not to take any preconceived notions with what we’ve learned in the past and be understanding that we are breaking new ground.”

US Marines near start of F-35 fighter training flights Fri Feb 24, 2012

http://militaryfeed.com/us-marines-near ... g-flights/

"...Lockheed this week said current plans called 1,001 test flights in 2012 to accomplish over 7,800 test points, but that number could expand throughout the year. It said 114 flight tests had been this year to date, hitting 773 test points.

The Air Force is expected to issue a military flight release for the new radar-evading supersonic F-35A jets within weeks, followed by approval for flights of the F-35B jets in early spring, said Colonel Arthur Tomassetti, vice commander of the 33rd Fighter Wing at the base, which is responsible for training U.S. military forces to operate the new planes.

Tomassetti, a military test pilot who has been involved with the F-35 program since its start, said there were over 1,000 people in the fighter wing, including 40 pilots from all three services, each of whom had over 1,000 flight hours.

Flight training was starting later than initially planned, but would ramp up steadily over this year, he said. Pilots and maintainers were already using simulators to learn as much about the airplane as they could. Some had also traveled to other F-35 bases to observe maintenance procedures there, he said.

“We have not wasted the extra time we’ve been given,” Tomassetti told Reuters."

More or less same as previous post on this thread at the jump but worth a look.

F-35B training kick-off set for early April By:Dave Majumdar Washington DC 9 Mar 2012

http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articl ... il-369303/

"The US Marine Corps hopes to start local area flights with the Lockheed Martin F-35B at Eglin AFB, Florida, in early April, with operational student pilots starting to train "in the autumn", a senior service official says....

...Based on the most recent JSF programme office schedules we expect to standup our OT&E [operational test and evaluation] F-35B detachment at Edwards AFB in mid-2014, to be ready for the commencement of Block 2B operational test and evaluation later that year," he says. "Until then our operational aircraft will augment our training aircraft in VMFAT-501 and receive the necessary hardware and software modifications to get them ready for OT&E."...

..."JSF operational testing will be part of the Joint Operational Test Team at Edwards AFB," the official says. "The Marine Corps will form an F-35B detachment to join this organization from VMX-22." VMX-22 is the same marine operational test squadron that evaluated the Bell Boeing MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor. The pilots and maintainers at the unit will emphasise expeditionary warfare requirements during F-35B operational testing, the official says."
