Executive approved today the buy of 24 F-16 second hand.
At the moment the news doesn't contain other details: from whom, what engines, what block. Probably will be upgraded to Block 50/52 plus new engines.

The decision must be also approved by Parliament.

How about the source? Ex-USAf from AMARG? Ex-Israeli, one of the NATO users (although I thought that most of those had ben sold off to Jordan/Chile). Heck, I guess even Venezuela has some used F-16s that could go

$900 million to $1.2 Billion for 24 used Block 25 F-16Cs. It makes more than 40 millions USD for each aircraft. Isn't it too much? Or is the USD becoming a weak currency?

The article says:

"The F-16s will be offered at no charge, but Romania must stump up the cash to pay the cost to train pilots, maintenance crews, upgrade local infrastructure at airfields and any updates necessary to the airframes."

Thought the Block 25's were just about out of remaining lifetime?

Hello, this is my first post here, thought I'd drop in since my country has just(officially) decided in favour of the F-16.

From what circulated around the media over here, we were supposed to pay for the avionics (besides the expenses mentioned by Asif) and basically, we'd receive the airframes for free. There's still a lot of fuss around this, people are kinda frustrated RoAF didn't go for the JAS-39 so not much official word has been spoken out yet.

BUT, what they did confirm (well, almost) is that the 24 Block 25s are the first part from a 3-stage modernisation program. The other two stages consist in buying 24 brand new Block 50-52s (heck knows when) and the replacement of the older F-16s with F-35s, this being the last stage.

This is what I've found out from the media, so correct me if I am wrong in any way.

Romania will have to develop the capability to support and operate the F-16 from scratch, it's the support equipment and infrastructure that will be the biggest cost here.

Plus I suspect the airframes and avionics/sensors will be updated prior to delivery, and you'll have to pay for an appropriate weapons package too, which is no small expense in of itself...

I guess Saab and Eurofighter didn't make these offers in 2009 when asked ... Some doesn't know to loose.
