Korea picks BAE Systems for fighter jet upgrade project 07-31-2012 09:44

Korea has selected British defense firm BAE Systems Inc. for a 1.3 trillion won ($1.1 billion) project to upgrade the country's aging KF-16 fighter jets, the state arms procurement agency said Tuesday.

Anything specific about this upgrade? What AESA radar are they planning to use? Is the cockpit layout going to change? New displays?

BAE Systems U.S.-based Support Solutions business to be the sole source systems integration contractor for upgrading more than 130 F-16s...

The work will be performed primarily at BAE Systems’ facilities in...

Work will also be conducted at the company’s aviation hangers [sic] in...

Ferrying small batches of KF-16s across the Pacific Ocean, then all over USA, forth and back, for the upgrades and tests, sound inconvenient, IMO.

And upgrading presumably all 130-odd KF-16s will take aeons, eh, years.

OTOH, stalkers, eh, photographers at these BAE Systems facilities may help fill in the F-16.net ROKAF KF-16 missing photos. XD

Weren't CCIP upgrades on USAF Vipers completed in country by Korean industries? If so, wouldn't they have the capability to this locally instead of fly the birds back to the states? It does sound a bit inconvenient. If it means more US jobs, then I guess there is a bright side.

Conflict of interest on KF-16 deal
09-03-2012 18:22

Col. Baek was responding to an allegation that Brig. Gen. Cho Bo-keun at DAPA may have been connected to the selection of BAE Systems for a $1.1 billion deal to upgrade the nation’s aging KF-16 fighter jets.
His elder brother, retired Rear Adm. Cho Boo-keun has long worked as a senior advisor to BAE.
The company vehemently denied Cho Boo-keun had anything to do with its winning the deal, while DAPA also dismissed any possibility.

Hello, I have a question about the Korean F-16 Upgrade Contract.

From: http://www.aviationweek.com/Article....482308.xml&p=2

South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Agency (DAPA) chose BAE to upgrade the fighters because its quoted price—$750 million—was lower than that of rival Lockheed Martin, which asked for more than $1 billion...

Adding equipment and engineering to be supplied by equipment makers, plus local installation work, the Korean upgrade program will reportedly cost 1.80 trillion won ($1.60 billion), of which 673 billion won appears to be allocated to the radar.

The most important element of the Korean upgrade is an active, electronically scanned array (AESA) radar. This is to be selected separately by DAPA, between the Raytheon Advanced Combat Radar (Racr) and Northrop Grumman's Scalable Agile Beam Radar (Sabr).

So from AW it seems that the costs are well defined, with the total cost of the program for updating 134 F-16 being $1.60 billion, of which around one third (673 billion won) allocated to the radars to be chosen between RACR and SABR.
Well, I know that the new generation of AESA radars is less expensive then the previous one.
Nevertheless this figure sound to me a bit optimistic / too low. Is it possible that Aviation Week misunderstood in some way that terms of the contract and the contract does not yet include the radars, or the article is correct and each radar will cost just below $4 milion circa (that would be quite intersting)?

Thank you for any input on the matter

Seems ROKAF AEW, F-15Ks, and KF-16s did their annual first flight of the year for 2013, but the photos in this blog article aren't hi-res enough to read tail codes. 8(

Is BAE designing a new custom upgrade with new systems or are they just performing the upgrade work of a program that has already been done (CUPID, CCIP, F-16V, etc)? Is this just for Block 52 aircraft or will Block 32 birds be candidates for upgrade as well?

Apparently a few South Korean female singers went to a ROKAF air base of the 20th FW, ROKAF.
Note the "20" badges on their flight suits.

Can't read the serial number on the KF-16 in the photo though.

To Gamera -

And why can't you read the serial number on the F-16 tail, sir?

Was there something distracting the view?

I wonder if those girls are within ejection limits for the KF-16?

103 Lb "nude" weight is the USAF standard with the newer seats, and I'm guessing the Koreans would have switched to the lower weight limit. I'm not sure when the USAF officially changed the requirements from 140 Lb but I'd assume in the 90s. I asked a senior female pilot and she said that she had to get a waiver for her flight, when she was a cadet, at around 130 Lb when she was 15, and still wears original NJROTC authorized flight suit. She changed the rank insignia, and keeps it for special occasions. I'm guessing she weighs around 145 Lb now and is fully qualified for both the F-16 ACES II and the F/A-18F NACES II Seats.

ADEX 2013: KF-16 upgrade to be signed off by end of year
2013-11-02
BAE Systems is working with the United States and South Korean governments to refine the plans for its upgrade of Lockheed Martin KF-16 fighters ahead of a government-to-government contract signing by the end of 2013, officials told IHS Jane's at the Seoul International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition (ADEX 2013).

Major Kim Tae-seok of the Air Force’s 19th Fighter Wing poses Friday inside a KF-16 after being named the Top Gun pilot for 2013. The 36-year-old scored 995 points out of a possible 1,000 in an aerial live-fire contest to garner the honor.
