I saw this photo in Keypublishing. When you look at closely the edge is not straight but have very weird pattern. What could be the purpose of these strange edges? anyone have any idea?

That must be a glitch in the photo software. Here is a much larger photo of the same area of the F-35 and the line is straight.

That's what happens when you take a larger higher resolution picture, and compress it to lower resolution, and then blow it back up again while using options that emphasize edge sharpness.

On your smartphone install the Google Translate app.

In that app you can upload images and have Google Translate search for text in it to translate.

It's not a perfect translation but it can give good pointers. E.g.: the top left line translates to "(a) There is no chamfer in the airfoil (there are sharp corners)"

Full 40MP original.

Download the image as browser won't zoom in close enough, the image is huge.

With jpeg, it is the lossy compression ratio that matters, not resolution. I say it's an artifact. Light vs shadow, and a straight almost horizontal edge. Textbook recipe for artifacts.

png is not always uncompressed, was the png uncompressed, and NOT converted from a lossy format?

Digital effects.

There are no variations like that in any of those edges. Have seen the jets up close enough to know.

It's just weaknesses in the JPEG standard causing the oddities.

Not a weakness, but there by design. Other formats have the lossless part covered :D
