The Netherlands has confirmed its decision to purchase eight F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters that will arrive in the country in 2019, the Ministry of Defense announced today. The deal was signed in Washington DC last night.

“It is good that after 12 years of political debate there is now clarity about the successor of the F-16″, said Minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert of Defense. “This is the point of no return. The F-35 is the most modern fighter aircraft that can be used for various tasks. Several comparisons have shown that the device complies with the Dutch requirements. This unit is important for the entire armed forces. Men and women who are sent on mission, must have access to the best equipment. Air support is indispensable and the device’s good sensors will strongly  improve the information  position of troops on the ground.”

"Nederland zal acht of negen extra F35-straaljagers kopen. Minister van defensie Ank Bijleveld zegt in een interview met deze krant dat ze op deze manier het grootste deel van de in totaal 1,5 miljard euro wil besteden die het kabinet in de recente voorjaarsnota uittrok voor de krijgsmacht.

Het vorige kabinet besloot al tot de aankoop van 37 F35-toestellen ter vervanging van de F16. Er was meteen kritiek: het aantal van 37 zou te laag zijn. Omdat piloten ook bezig zijn met trainen en de bewaking van het Nederlandse luchtruim, zouden maar vier vliegtuigen permanent op een buitenlandse missie kunnen. Mocht een toestel neerstorten, dan zou zelfs die beperkte opdracht lastig worden.

Vorig jaar diende het kabinet een plan in bij de Navo waarin staat hoe Nederland de krijgsmacht de komende jaren wil uitbreiden. Een onderdeel daarvan is een extra squadron van 15 F35-toestellen.

Met het extra geld van in totaal 1,5 miljard euro voor de periode tot 2024 uit de voorjaarsnota gaat die wens nu deels in vervulling. Het geld gaat verder naar betere arbeidsvoorwaarden voor het personeel, digitale oorlogsvoering en speciale eenheden.

The previous cabinet already decided to purchase 37 F35 aircraft to replace the F16. There was immediate criticism: the number of 37 would be too low. Navo-plan
Volgens Bijleveld is er volgend jaar weer extra geld nodig om te voldoen aan het Navo-plan. Ze hoopt een update van haar beleidsplannen af te hebben voor de voorjaarsnota van 2020. Nederland kondigde in het Navo-plan ook aan raketverdediging op marineschepen te plaatsen, en de landmacht met extra artillerie en tanks van meer vuurkracht te voorzien, waar nu nog geen geld voor is.

Vorige maand kondigde Defensie al aan luchtmachtbasis De Peel te heropenen voor vliegverkeer. De afgelopen jaren was hier alleen een eenheid met luchtverdedigingsraketten gevestigd. Maar door te verwachten extra oefeningen met de F35 en helikopters heeft de luchtmacht meer ruimte nodig. Vanaf 2021 zou De Peel dan weer beschikbaar zijn om daar onder meer achttien weken per jaar met een twaalftal straaljagers te vliegen.

NATO plan
According to Bijleveld, extra money will be needed again next year to comply with the NATO plan. She hopes to have an update of her policy plans for the spring memorandum of 2020. The Netherlands also announced in the NATO plan to place missile defense on naval ships, and to provide the army with extra artillery and tanks with more firepower, where no money is available yet for is.

Last month, the Ministry of Defense announced that it would reopen air force base De Peel for air traffic. In recent years, only a unit with air defense missiles was located here.
