Hmmm ... my NC based grandkids are heading to Florida to avoid the whole mess... and a big ship like QE is worried about being there? Maybe he should drive to Kansas or something ... LOL

BP

PS On the other hand ... I'd probably avoid Norfolk VA for the next several days. Just enjoy the FL sunshine this week.

 1.5 million people are ordered to evacuate (hope it is not their bowels all at the same time) but anyhoo:

http://www.msn.com/en-au/news/world/peo ... ar-BBNaitc

AFAIK QE has a bunch of supplies for local pop. in this kind of scenario so I'm hoping it all works out well for all meantime.

Also reported earlier QE looks for bad weather for trials to gauge seakeeping qualities (before the F-35B trials later).

There's a strong suggestion in some models that it will stall on the coast as a cat-3 and track parallel along Georgia's coast.

This model run is half an hour old at time of posting. Goes in just South of Savannah

Marine F-35B pilot will land on Royal Navy’s hotshot new aircraft carrier
11 Sep 2018 Shawn Snow

"A U.S. Marine F-35B pilot will be landing on the deck of the Royal Navy’s newest and most advanced aircraft carrier, the HMS Queen Elizabeth, when the ship arrives at Patuxent, Maryland, for scheduled flight trials....

...U.S. Marine Maj. Michael Lippert, an F-35B test pilot at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, will not be the first to touch down on Britain’s new carrier. That honor will go to Royal Navy Cdr. Nathan Gray and Royal Air Force Sq. Ldr. Andrew Edgell, both are test pilots with the Pax River Integrated Test Force, according to Connie Hempel, a spokeswoman with Pax River ITF.

For two phases of the flight trials “the Pax River ITF team plans to perform a variety of flight maneuvers and deck operations to develop the F-35B operating envelope on Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) carriers,” Hempel said in an email to Marine Corps Times. “They will evaluate jet performance on over 200 test points during different weather and sea conditions as well as the aircraft’s integration with the ship.”...

...A third phase of flight trials is scheduled for 2019. “Together, the tests will help the U.K. Ministry of Defence reach F-35B initial operating capability (maritime) in 2020,” Hempel said."

Since there were worries about the QE carrier and the hurricane Florence, I would propose performing the following "ultimate test":
- Send the carrier and a F-35B towards and inside the hurricane and land the F-35B on the carrier there. If everything works out ok than all other situation could/should be considerate as "checked" or "done", right?

P.S - I'm joking here
“Active stealth” is what the ignorant nay sayers call EW and pretend like it’s new.

IIRC the first F-35C arrest was done in the bad WX at the edge of an Hurricane so nothing new in that concept. GO TEAM.

ITF team nears historic testing with HMS Queen Elizabeth [long article - more at the URL]
12 Sep 2018 PEO(JSF) Integrated Test Facility Public Affairs

"NAVAL AIR STATION PATUXENT RIVER, Md. — The F-35 Patuxent River Integrated Test Force (ITF) is nearing another milestone as they prepare to embark two F-35Bs on board the United Kingdom’s newest aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth for First of Class Flight Trials (Fixed Wing), or FOCFT (FW), this fall....

...During two FOCFT (FW) phases, held back-to-back this fall, the team plans to perform a variety of flight maneuvers and deck operations to develop the F-35B operating envelope on Queen Elizabeth Class (QEC) carriers. They will evaluate jet performance on over 200 test points during different weather and sea conditions as well as the aircraft’s integration with the ship.

The FOCFT (FW) is the culmination of a decade of planning with individuals from U.K. and U.S. governments and industry partners in both countries.

“It has been a genuine team endeavor from the start,” said Dave Atkinson, BAE Systems lead for FOCFT (FW), based in the U.K. “No one individual or no one organization can do everything on something of this scale. The detailed knowledge you need about the ship, the aircraft and the environment; you really must have a team ethos.”

While planning for test events typically doesn’t start that far ahead, Atkinson said all the moving parts and specific equipment needed to integrate the jet and carrier, coupled with the simultaneous design and development of the two, the lead time “had to be extensive to bring many elements together.”

As ship and jet development on both sides of the Atlantic neared completion, engineers and pilots from the Pax River ITF and BAE Systems dove deep into writing the test plan, a 300-plus page manual detailing the FOCFT (FW) execution.

In order to do so, pilots and engineers experimented with over 3,000 takeoffs and landings in BAE Systems' F-35/QEC Integration Simulator—a full motion, dome simulator—based in Warton, England, to discover “where the edges of the test envelope are,” said Royal Air Force Sq. Ldr. Andy Edgell, FOCFT (FW) lead test pilot at the Pax River ITF.

“That was where we really got the first idea of how far can we push this aircraft on [a Queen Elizabeth Class carrier] deck,” he said. “The Queen Elizabeth Class carriers are incredibly unique.”

Edgell said there are a few “British traits” built onto HMS Queen Elizabeth—notably, a ski jump ramp at the front and iconic twin islands on the flight deck separating the Bridge and Flight Control (FLYCO)—and each create variances to typical flying operations experienced on an American naval vessel.

“First drafts of the test plan were authored in early 2017, and the team spent months in 2018 further sculpting and crafting each detail to complete the document in time to start the required training flights prior to the trial,” said Timothy Marge, FOCFT (FW) lead project engineer at the Pax River ITF....

...Since June, the team has focused on live flying workups refreshing their skills on day and night field carrier landing practices, ski jump takeoffs and vertical landings. The team also conducted rolling vertical landings in preparation for another unique British development.

“[Rolling vertical landings] are an important phase of the workups because another unique aspect of going to the Queen Elizabeth Class carrier is that we will be conducting experimental testing of a novel recovery landing technique—the Shipborne Rolling Vertical Landing,” Edgell said.

The Shipborne Rolling Vertical Landing (SRVL) is a British endeavor—a capability at least a decade in the making—that will allow pilots to return to ship with more stores on the aircraft after a mission, Atkinson explained.

“SRVL tests are truly experimental,” Edgell said. “It involves landing a fast jet onto an aircraft carrier with forward relative speed but without the braking assistance typically provided by an arresting gear and hook. It’s going to be a really rewarding moment for British aviation to watch that procedure actually take place.”

“This is quite a massive trial, not only for the U.K., but for the ITF,” Crockatt said.

A third FOCFT (FW) phase followed by operational testing is scheduled for 2019. Together, the tests will help the U.K. Ministry of Defence reach F-35B initial operating capability (maritime) in 2020...."

It's quite a technical marvel that the F-35B achieves in dry vertical thrust over 40 klbf which in conventional flight requires afterburner while still having twice the internal fuel of an F-16 and not being a bus in ACM. That 7g limited Paris show display gives a flavor of what F-35B could do. Kudos to the whole F-35A/B/C teams for a job well done.

SKY PILOT ROOLS THE WAVES!
Hurricanes and Lightnings. HMS Queen Elizabeth Westlant 18 deployment – Part 2
19 Sep 2018 SaveTheRoyalNavy

"HMS Queen Elizabeth arrived at Naval Sation Mayport, Florida 5th September for what was intended to be a brief visit. The arrival of Hurricane Florence in the Eastern Atlantic resulted in a considerable change to the programme and she remained in Mayport until the 13th September....

...Both QE and HMS Monmouth took evasive action to avoid the damaging winds which have lashed North and South Carolina and Virginia, bringing tidal surges and several months’ worth of rain through the weekend. QE skirted south of the Hurricane, but still close enough for the effects to still be felt. The ship encountered four-metre swell, five-metre wave height and winds gusting 40 knots....

...The visit to Norfolk is primarily to embark around 200 personnel and test equipment from the F-35 Integrated Test Force (ITF). They will install sensors, data collection and analysis equipment ready for the F35-B First of Class Flying Trials (FOCFT) which are scheduled to start this coming weekend. The ship will be at sea for about 3 weeks conducting the first of the two Development Testing (DT-1) phases planned for the Westlant 18 deployment. She is due to visit New York at the end of October before beginning the second phase of development flying."

Photo: "Note the ‘Bish’ (ship’s chaplain) in position on the top of the ski ramp. An excellent tradition of having the ‘sky pilot’ in the eyes of the ship has now been established on entering and leaving harbour." https://www.savetheroyalnavy.org/wp-con ... folk-3.jpg
