"The German Air Force’s decision to split-buying the Typhoons along with the Boeing F-18 Super Hornets arises due to the need for their fighters to carry nuclear weapons to meet the requirements under the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and a German security whitepaper released in 2016.

A proposed number of 93 new European-built Typhoons and 45 Hornets will fill the 10-year gap between the latest date a successor is needed to replace Tornado and the 2040 target for the joint French, Spanish and German effort to build a next-generation FCAS....

...The ministry also states that the proposal will be submitted to parliament in 2022 or 2023 where it will make a final decision on whether to proceed with the split-buy. Reports also suggest that initial approaches have been made for the acquisition of F-18s from the US and for the procurement of Typhoons from the European consortium."

Angela Merkel will leave office in 2021. Yet, the German Parliament won't make any final decision until 2022 - 2023. So, who knows maybe the F-35 will be reconsidered....

Especially, as more and more European Countries select the F-35. For example would the selection of the F-35 by Finland and/or Switzerland influence Germany in the same direction???

Also, Spain is said to be interested the F-35 for their Navy and possibly even their Air Force!

No. The only thing outside the USA influencing them is France. France vetoed the F-35 because of the FCAS future 5th gen aircraft they are jointly developing. They are *not* going to reconsider this very very compromised order, it was tortuous enough getting there. Finland and Switzerland aren't in NATO, they're neutral. Nothing they do influences Germany at a military level.

How does France 'veto' German fighter procurement decisions? They don't have any such capacity. This is a German decision and France will live with whatever the Germans procure.

Anyone can see that buying a new Super Hornet force for the role is a ludicrous choice when ~600 F-35A/B/C stealth strikefighters are just about to hit FOC, all over the world, during the next 3 years, and the Super Hornet's replacement is not far away either.

But there's always the possibility that the Germans actually want to be laughed at for the next 30 years, and to have a demoralized and inferior air combat force.

France has a veto in that they run the FCAS program. Germany became the replacement partner when Brexit happened and the UK went it's own way on Tempest. One of the conditions of Germany being in FCAS is that they do not acquire the F-35. France told them during the selection of the Tornado replacement they would be dropped if the F-35 was selected. You don't realize the level of Franco-German coordination on all things governmental, they are the nexus of the European Union centralization and uniformization engine. Joint European military procurement of European weaponry is one of the stated goals and the pressure from the French on this is enormous. Macron and Merkel rebuilt the Franco-German relationship and thus Macron has a say in all this.
