The upgrade costs almost as much as the planes themselves. Good idea though, all Vipers that are going to serve longer than 10 more years should be upgraded to V.

If they want to stay competitive with the Turks they should really be thinking about the F-35 for that kind of money.

It's a short term thing, sure, but it is much better for the short term. I have no doubt they can get all 123 F-16s upgraded before they would be able to take delivery of 20 F-35s. In addition this way they keep the same logistics train that they already have in place. Let them buy F-35s later, right now this is a good interim choice.

$19m per unit?

"That kind of money" will buy you the F-35s engine... but not much plane to go with it.

$19m per aircraft is fine for what will deliver 123 quite capable aircraft.
And remember, while no nation ever truly goes broke, Greece are the closest thing to it.

The initial plans included also the block 30 airframes. It would be a total number of 155 F-16s. But block 30 airframes are excluded from this upgrade. They are offered for sale to Croatia (18 planes), together with used USAF F-16s, Israelis F-16 block 30, and used Grippen.

The most advanced version of the F-16 today, with APG-83 AESA radar.

some corrections the program costs 2.4b TOTAl including the reverse benefits of the agreament to the Greek industry e.t.c.
the actual cost for the modernization is aprox 1,3billis for 123 pieces

it is very cost effective because with those money we could buy onle 6-10 F 35 , and we lost all the 30 years f-16 investment we already had

Investment in existing F-16 fleet will never be lost, as this has covered the requirement since first introduction back in the 80's. But it is most likely cheaper than buying only a modest fleet of F-35's, yet still having to upgrade the remaining fleet of F-16's to an acceptable standard (F-16V?)
Best regards

Why the engine upgrade isnt the part of "V" pogramme? GE-132 and PW-232 should be an option as well. A fighter getting on weight isnt something desirable when the power remains unchanged

GE-132 perhaps - not certain what it would take for PW-232 to be a viable option outside of a lot of money.

For upgraded Jets there might not be much in the way of extra weight, if the new builds have provision for CFTs then that might add something.

The cost of the -132 must be taken into consideration. And its add weight "could" adversely impact the aircraft's CG.

That would increase the upgrade cost of each plane by something on the order of 50%.

From a cost benefit analysis going from MSA to AESA with a new mission computer and internal ECM is going to go much further in your ability to fight a war than 10% more thrust in AB. As much as I love thrust, the cost justification just isn't there.

At the rate that Turkey is spiraling out of the Western orbit, the chance of them actually acquiring the F-35 approaches zero.

If they proceed with the S400 purchase and integration, which, if anyone needs reminding, would be done by Russian personnel, the US would be quite stupid to still allow the purchase to go through. It's one step removed from handing the Russians an F-35 for reverse-engineering.
