Korea may nix BAE's KF-16 upgrade deal

2014/10/15

A military procurement official indicated Wednesday that a 1.75 trillion-won deal agreed with BAE Systems to upgrade the ROK Air Force fleet of 130 KF-16s could be nullified.

Officials refused to elaborate on how much more the two parties have asked Seoul to pay, but a report claimed that the total amounted to 800 billion won, 300 billion won to BAE and 500 billion won to the U.S. government.

Just curious as to what is the alternative option(s)?

Personally, I would contemplate a radical upgrade evaluation and study... to include contracting both NASA and Boeing, as well as LM(?), for an affordable and effective 8k hr upgrade path with all-new delta-wing (+ CFT) replacement (for extended loitering and endurance).

Times have changed. It's a new era. The narrow scope of protocol and thinking have passed, with respect to old-day typical upgrades et al.

It's time to get strategic, prudent and 'build muscle - cut fat'... going forward. Just my views.

Respects to Korea~

Yes upgrading them into F-16XLs is totally possible, cheap too and on an 8K hour airframe? piece of cake! I bet they totally do it. And when I think NASA, I think "affordable"

Its so simple too!

what?

So you are trying to say that upgrades have to be radical and drastic, yet affordable?

Exactly while also maximizing paradigms to the next level of operation art. respects to engineers who could never make this work for anything less than the cost of a whole new airplane

Interesting situation here. I'm reading the South Koreans aren't happy about the cost increases here, and the fact that the South Koreans are threatening to sue BAE suggests the relationship soured very quickly.

Seoul arms procurement agency mismanaged KF-16 upgrade: auditor

2016/06/16

SEOUL, June 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's state auditor said Thursday the country's state arms procurement agency mismanaged the upgrade program for the country's KF-16 fighter jets that resulted in huge losses and delays.

The Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI) said the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) is suspected of giving favors to a certain company while breaking regulation set out by the U.S. authorities.
The amount of losses is estimated to hover around 100 billion won (US$85 million), it said.

Prosecutors raid defense agency over info leak

2016/11/16

SEOUL, Nov. 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korean prosecutors said Wednesday they are investigating allegations that a military procurement official leaked confidential information on military equipment to BAE Systems, a British defense contractor.

Investigators from the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office raided the offices of the state Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) Tuesday and detained the official in charge of contracts for questioning.

"Prosecutors spotted a possible leakage of confidential information to a foreign defense industry company while they were investigating DAPA's mismanagement of a project to upgrade KF-16 fighter jets," a military official familiar with the matter told Yonhap News Agency.

F-16 combat jets upgraded with bombs, missiles that can strike key N. Korea targets

2016/12/19

The completion of the upgrade enables the South Korean jets to fire AIM-120 mid-range air-to-air missiles, according to the Air Force.
The missiles have a range of 50 to 180 kilometers.

They will also be equipped with GBU-31 JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) air-to-ground guided bombs, which can hit underground military facilities and neutralize the North Korean leadership in the event of an emergency, it added.

In November 2009, South Korea inked a deal to upgrade the F-16 combat planes with Lockheed Martin Corp.
A total of around 30 jets have been improved since October 2013.
