Not sure where I picked that up but I guess I can safely assume you are right, so I at least removed the word 'faulty'. Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

I've restored the Canadian spelling.

Well, I realize you have a different 'Eh BC', so will try to take that into account. ;-)

Removing the word 'faulty' still leaves a title that says the main fuel shutoff valve doomed the jet. I think a better title would be "Closure of the main fuel shutoff valve doomed Misawa F-16".

I'm not that familiar with the F-16s electrical or fuel system, but I'm kind of wondering how the "main valve" could become a single point of failure? Wouldn't there be some sort of redundancy, like sending fuel from an alternate tank source to the mechanical backup engine control? In the F/A-18 there are ways to limp home with fuel systems problems, assuming both engines are functional or the remaining engine produces 100% mil thrust.

The engine feed line is the sole path to get fuel to the engine and the main fuel shutoff valve is in that path. Redundancy adds weight which was probably not desirable or deemed needed. There have been significant improvements to the main fuel shutoff valve and its control circuitry over the years to keep it open in flight. It's too bad that the crash recorder's memory chips were crushed by the water pressure. The recorder has data regarding the commanded position and actual position of the valve.

Good to hear he was rescued.

Been there, done that in 38 degree water; 22 March '87. A model.

Watching a Soviet SAG transit the Tsugaru Striats.

The JSDAF lost an F-1 the next day; High seas. Never found the pilot.
