PoAF F-16 Aborted Takeoff (photos with brakes on fire)

A scary moment happened at Monte Real on the 26th October when a Portuguese F-16 aborted take-off failed the security barrier and stopped only 300ft for the end of the runway. Fortunately all ended well.

Here a few moments before the stop smoking and with the brakes glowing!!

Hello,

How much time It had to wait for the breaks cool down? The plane stayed in the middle of the runway, or it managed go get out by its own?

Hi

They waited 45 minutes, after the ground team replaced the tires because they were burned and a tractor came to pull the MLU for the hangar.

It was a flight for a refueling training mission with a new Airbus A-330 refueling aircraft.

1. Did you take more pic from that event?
2. I guess The A330 MRTT was RAF's, was it a drill?

Great photo of max effort braking by the pilot - speedbrakes full open, stick aft (horizontal tails are trailing edge up), hard on the brakes (nose strut compressed), and the brakes giving it their all. It would be interesting to know why the apparent attempted cable engagement didn't work.

Also for me it's interesting to know why the cable did'nt engaged?
I guess there was no need for the Barricade to activate

This is the reason you have a drag chute. When you have to stop the plane it is a BIG help.

I cant attach more photos due to proctetion of the identity of the people including the pilot.

I dont know the reason why not the cable was not engaged, but the cable was in position...

After the incident the runway changed, probably for the utilization of the other cable on oposite runway (rwy 19).

There is no way I would be standing where the fire department guy is standing on the right side of the aircraft in the first of the set of three above.

Awesome photos of hot brakes. I have personally never seen any that hot before! I hope they don't stop at just replacing the wheels and tires, the axles definitely need a good look.

The primary reason for the Drag Chute IS to shorten the landing roll! The Drag chute normally used on F-16's is never even been testflown as a spin recovery device.

If it was installed for anti-spin recovery don't you think it would be in the Caps of every airforce flying with Vipers with a drag chute installed??? Well it's not.

The brakes of the F-16 are okay but can be easily overheated, especially with a high speed abort, that's why the drag chute was installed and it already safed lots of pilots AND jets all over the world. True the Drag chute compartment looks like crap, but it's very very useful!! For aborts that is!
