Sorry I can't really give you any advice with pointers I've never actually been to an interview because I am only 17 but there is a very helpful book called. How To Win ROTC Scholarships by chuck brewer although it is for ROTC they have a good section on what to say and how to present your self during an interview.. It's a cheap book, I would reccomend it for pointers and I think it will help you out.

I already have a couple interviews with F-16 units. I have been enlisted in an F-16 unit for 2.5 yrs and here are some details about me,
-PCSM 97
-Pilot 95
-Nav 78
(Other scores not great but passing)
-Honor Grad (top 3%) in ALL AF training
-Top Physical Fitness Performer at Basic
-Intel Analyst (work with pilots day in and out doing mission planning and academics)
-Grades ok...but not great
-Letters of Rec from
-2 letters from f-16CJ Drivers in my unit(Majors, and IPs), 1 from an AA 777 captain who was a T-38 IP and Zoo grad, Vietnam Vet F-4 driver, Tech School Intel course supervisor, My NCOIC and Intel commander who was an EWO and F-4 backseater.

Oh Yeah... With My PCSM you can see that I do have a few hours.
I have my PPL and almost Inst. Rated

All the enlisted folks that I've seen get pilots slots have already been rated pilots (civilian) with a fair number of hours. In most cases they're already members of the ANG too. If you don't have at least an FAA instrument rating it's probably not going to matter much about interview skills.

You will find that ANG units are very tight and the competition is usually pretty tough - especially if you are competing against folks in the unit. If you find that you interview a bunch of places but don't get selected I do have some advice as to how to get a pilot slot in the ANG. Find a unit that has a high percentage of Majors and above with 25+ years. That will help to make sure there will be plenty of slots opening up. Then go in that unit as an enlisted person. I've noticed that they select a higher % of folks from aicraft mx AFSC's than the others. In particular Crew Chiefs. Maybe because we have regular contact with the crews and they get to see our work. Maybe some because of our knowledge of the jet. Then keep building your civil flight hours and voulnteer for every trip and any extra mandays that you can afford - it will keep you in front of the crews. The ANG is VERY political and much like an extended family - so you have to play the game right.

Also the BRAC list typically changes by 10-15% so you might still find yourself in a BRAC'd unit.

This is a little late, but Congrats willo!

I know that there are slots for the ANG and the AD USAF, but can you win a slot from a reserve unit? How does that differ from winning a slot in the guard?

Yes you can... but the reserve has fewer fighters thus less slots. If you have the connections with a reserve unit (ie: Enlisted in one as I am in the guard... though I didnt get hired at my F-16 unit?) then you could have a shot. You have to get a pilot or two in that unit to sponsor you. Some kind of board meets with you and then they decide. Best way to find out is to call... Dont take "no" for an answer.

BTW... I didnt get hired at my unit simply because the unit that hired me interviewed me first. I took the first ride I could get. My unit which flies Blk 52s and has much more cool stuff(JHMCS/AIM-9X/SNIPER PODS) is interviewing next month... anyway... it was a tough decision when all your pilots want you around... but a Viper is a Viper to to me! Went with the first offer!

Note: Not to say I was going to get hired by my unit... who knows?!
