Floggers eating vipers?

Agreed, it will never be a fair fight but how would the F-16 match up against the ... ?

I came across this link. It gives the idea that the mig-23 was regularly splatting Israeli vipers. I wouldn't think the flogger would be so regularly competitive v a viper in a dogfight. can anyone elaborate on these claims?

There were also 14 F-16 vs Mig-23 kills.

Code: Select all
1-Apr-82   Ze'ev Raz   F-16   107   MiG-23   Syria
21-Apr-82   Ze'ev Raz   F-16      MiG-23   Syra
21-Apr-82   Hagai Katz   F-16      MiG-23   Syra
8-Jun-82   Shlomo Sas   F-16      MiG-23   Syria
8-Jun-82   Avishai Kanaan   F-16      MiG-23   Syria
8-Jun-82   Dov Opher   F-16      MiG-23   Syria
9-Jun-82   Eytan S   F-16      MiG-23   Syria
9-Jun-82   Yehuda Bavli   F-16      MiG-23   Syria
10-Jun-82   Amir Nahumi   F-16      MiG-23   Syria
10-Jun-82   Amir Nahumi   F-16      MiG-23   Syria
11-Jun-82   Eytan S   F-16A   107   MiG-23   Syria
11-Jun-82   Eytan S   F-16A   107   MiG-23   Syria
11-Jun-82   Rafi Raz   F-16      MiG-23   Syria
11-Jun-82   Rafi Raz   F-16      MiG-23   Syria

One thing to consider is what version of the F-16 were flying and what mission were they performing when they were shot down. In 1982 all the F-16s were A models and shot down 41 aircraft in 1982 (of which 14 were Mig-23).

btw, this site only has 6 Mig-23 vs F-16 kills. Notice that the "claims" are in white and unconfirmed while the Isreali kills are confirmed.

Syrian MiG-23s downing Israeli F-16s? I would be surprised if they had downed even 1 or 2 in air to air combat. If ANY were downed it probably would have been from SAMs at best.

I would love to hear more about the alleged downings of F-16s back then!
Why is the vodka gone?

No Israeli F-16s(or F-15s), have been downed in A2A combat.

The Israeli AF is so small it is ease to count the number of F-15s and F-16s that are at any air base, at any time. Satellites of many countries can tell by photograph of the crash sites and see what type of plane was shot down.
One thing also interesting about aerial combat between the IAF and its neighboring AF's is that, combat occurs outside Israeli borders! So the press has access to the crash site before the military is able to close the area. (Similar to the media circus that occurred at the crash site when the F-117A was shot down over the Balkans.)

Only F-16s shot down by a missile was in the combat were between the Greek and Turkish air forces. One kill was made by a Mirage 2000 using a Matra Magic II missile against an F-16D back on 10/08/96. The pilot was killed, the WSO parachuted safely and was picked up be the Greek navy!

There is somewhere on this web board a lengthy article (not a posting) on this incident that happened on 10/08/96 but, I was not able to find the URL for this article.

I have more faith in the information on these URLs:

Another page with Israeli kill claims
