Can any one shed any light on the base itself or the local area? Any info would be helpful.

I lived in Clovis for three years (2003-2006) and thought house prices were very reasonable, $150-$200K ish. I wasn't a big fan of the area though. Whole lotta nothing out there, except for a bunch of cows. I would consider going back to for a few years if the money was right but definitely not some place i would plan on retiring at.

If you want to have nothing to do, then Clovis is the place for you. The 2 largest industries were cattle ranching and Walmart when I was there (96-98).

Was TDY there once, Clovis did have a few bars and at least one pool hall...

It was only for three days, I was ready to leave....

My wife and I (we were single when we both arrived) were stationed at Cannon back in 79', my wife in 78'. The town itself has not changed, very little to do, so you have to be creative in your off time. We usually went to Lubbock TX, 2-hour drive to the East (College town, malls, good restaurants) or Albuquerque NM, 4-hour drive to the West, a major city with all the amenities. (stayed at BAQ or hotel off base for the weekend).

There is also Lake Conchas, http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/PRD/Conchas.htm

Portales NM is the next "big city", roughly 11 miles from the base.(if one could call Portales big and a city.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portales,_New_Mexico

Eastern New Mexico University is located in Portales. Saw some pretty good concerts back in the day at ENMU. I'm told not a bad place to live and not that far of a drive from the base.

Here's a tip: If you are single don't hang around on base or you might wind up with cabin fever. Get some wheels and drive. There really is quite a bit to see but the scenery is VERY flat... until you hit Albuquerque.

We had a great time there, drinking out at Running Water Draw, driving to Lubbock and Albuquerque, swimming/partying out at the lake.

Our first place was right on the main road to the base (I believe Hwy 90), Sides Apartments. Our second place was a step-up. Nice one bedroom located on Gladstone street. Very clean but that was years ago. Prices were very cheap back then but the townspeople despised the military; loved our money.

Does Clovis still have the Aardvark-on-a-stick at that one intersection? Can't remember the street names. Last time I was there was 96-ish.
Why does "monosyllabic" have 5 syllables?
