Please write more about it. I am from nearby Hahn and have been doing a lot of historical work on the former 50th TFW. I'd be interested to hear your stories.

YES!!! I was a POL troop at Hahn 83-86. Best three months in the Air Force is when the 496th deployed to the German air base while the runway was under repair.

Tabvee's 1-18, plus pad 20, and of course the old Zulu Barn that got turned over to the GLCM folks. Also worked hot pits there...

Still can't figure out why they changed the tail stripe from red to yellow.

Of course the first Tac-Eval with the 16's was a pain because we were the first in Europe to have them. NATO figured you sold it to them, lets see what we could do with it...

The tail stripe on the F-16 was changed simply due to the fact that the 496th underwent a patch change in 1987. The "Electric Chicken" patch was replaced by the "Cave Canem" patch whose colors were "gold" (looked yellow). So it made sense with the arrival of the new F-16s in 1986 --- just about that time when this change was in the making - to change the tail stripe colors from red to gold. That`s my explanation .

I guess for me taking away the red whould have been like taking blue (which they kept) from the guys over in "the zoo"...

All of us thought the orange they started using in the 313th was close to a red and a slap at the 496th...

Also if you have not done so, check out Hahn Air Base and Spirit of Hahn Air Base on Yahoo Groups.

I was at Hahn from 1988 until the last F-16 left the base. Worked in the 313th as a crew chief. Had many friends from all 3 amu's.

Anyone remember our AGS commander, Maj. Jennifer Fox?

I was at Hahn at that time and in A Flight. I crewed the best aircraft in the world, 1325. Those were the good old days with Tim "Henry" Thompson and his RAT patrol, Mark Yates bunny hunting with the Eagle Bobtail, and Dave Hogan the only person I know who could break wind in full cem gear and clear out a TAB VEE and then laugh like Santa Clause after he was finished. I was also there when the 496th AMU won the last intramural softball league championship. Great TDYs good friends and a great place to be in my life, I’ll never forget it.

The orange came from out 313th TFS patch, silly. Blue for the Zoo. I don't know how you Big Dogs got stuck with gold.

The way I understand it, the colors in the early 80s were red (496th), white (313th), and blue (10th) for the obvious reason. But when the Air Force went into another of its past history mode changes, the 50th FW decide on the original yellow (496th), orange (313th), and blue (10th) when the pilots from the 496th heard about the new color change, they did not want to be called yellow and decided on gold instead. The new BDD patch (Walt Disney design) was yellow and replaced the old electric chicken patch from the F-4/F-16 area.

Hey Tim, It goes to show you that when you crew a jet great like 84-1325 (D model) the true Hahn history must be told. As you know 1325 is the greatest aircraft ever built and designed by mankind (you better get on a stool and pull you pant legs up, it’s going to get really deep in here soon). Its speed, beauty and unsurpassed FMC is second to none. 1325s innovations into state of the art aircraft aerodynamics and avionics design has even make the F-22 and F-35 look like 1st generation fighter designs (F-106, F-105, F-101 etc.) It has become the gold standard on how to build fight aircraft. Even the classified F-26 that’s still on the drawing broads cannot equal 1325s performance. Too much? I hope all is going well with you these days.
