P.S. From my Sluf days I comment.
We had the best avionics of any "fighter" at the time, even tho we all knew we were bomb trucks and had an "A" in front of our designation. So when we finally got into combat and used all the goodies we became very happy. The Hornet was the next jet to come close, and it was real close but still didn't have everything that we had. Its best improvement was the A2A radar, but it still did not have the TF/TA stuff we had ten years before. Also no backup nav like our doppler.
We could get coordinates from the FAC or TACC and then move our map to the place. The map had lat-long and UTM, so no big deal. Get with FAC and ask him is he was by the bend in the river or over near the hill to the east. FAC would then ask if we had been here before. We would reply, "No, but our map has", heh heh.
I used the map escorting a wounded Jolly outta N.V and across Laos to NKP for the Kansas 01B SAR. I had the terrain following/terrain avoidance radar working plus the map. Looked for a valley/pass for the Jolly who was on one motor. Found a promising route and told Jolly that's where we were headed. He asked if I knew the route and I said the map and TF radar said so. He still made me zoom ahead to confirm all the whiz bang nav stuff we had.
So coming into the tgt area with great SA is a biggie, and until this new jet, the old A-7D was the only one that had all the goodies.

Thanks. More good stuff, looks like software blocks and ALIS are the focus of part 3.

This is excellent journalism. Does any one know who Ryan Faith is? Does he lurk/post here at all?

I have always found vice news produce pretty balanced reporting. Their reporting on the Ukrainian war was excellent. Google vice news Russian roulette if your interested.

Don't know about him posting here but linkedin says that he's been Adjunct Fellow at CSIS-Space Exploration for 5 years and Research Analyst at Space Foundation for 3 years before signing on to VICE as Defense and Security Editor in January 2014. BSc, Theoretical and Applied Mechanics.
Here's him talking about space exploration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cjfTSM_dgk

I think the 3 part series was reasonably fair, it's difficult for the author to have a great perspective on part 3 but at least he concluded it with "it's too early to tell." Instead of just jumping on the anti-f35 bandwagon.
Gawd - I started on this forum seven years ago when first became interested in the F-35 (possibility of Oz F-35Bs on Oz LHDs but don't go there because I am not) so a lot of 'what came before' was not boring, as I was catching up & had less need for patience about 'arrested development'. So PERHAPS I'm tired but this 'part 3' seems incredibly tedious, bringing up lots of strawman arguments that are poorly rebutted. To me, citing 'again' the F-16 dogfight report, is the final nail.
Totally disappointed in the 3rd The basement dwellers have just spammed garbage so high that with Yahoo/MSN etc. reposts they obscure any truth. very sad actually.
