With regard to pilots’ first impressions after having just flown the F-35, the theme I continually read or hear, their first words are invariably

“It’s a BEAST...”

— OR —

“Oh... that MOTOR...” in a tone that suggest they might just trade their girlfriend, wife, or firstborn (maybe all three) for that motor...

Followed by comments about how easy it is to fly and/or the incredible situational awareness it affords the pilot.

Some interesting video from LM:

Check 00:20 and 00:25. The roll rate is EYE WATERING.

At the beginning of that video there are lots of speed ups & downs so I take whatever is shown 'speed-wise' with salt. Did you know the A-4 - at best roll speed of about 250 knots - rolled with full aileron deflection at 720 degrees per second?

Trouble is because of this quick roll along with 'roll coupling' effects the rolls were limited by NATOPS to ONE Rotation (in level flight) - in half a second. Don't try this at home. Mostly this roll rate was demonstrated at LESS than full aileron deflection because the stick had to be back at neutral & slightly beyond, to stop the roll - as I said - don't try this at home. One adjusted to this 'twinkling' roll effect quickly. It was great for dirty carrier approaches at Opt AoA of around 120 knots. We all knew the sprog/new guy because at liftoff the aircraft wobbled a bit laterally with PIO (Pilot Induced Oscillation) until the pilot learnt to relax & often fly slightly wing down, then adjust, feet on floor at all times of course.

As mentioned earlier about this aspect the Kiwi A-4K KAHU demonstration solo aircraft used to roll rapidly in the vertical plane whilst releasing flares. Kiwis with KAHU made their own 'NATOPS' Air Force style I guess - however it was 'NATOPS'.

Sounds like an Atlas V rocket booster at times............: Check
High alpha at or better than Hornet.........................: Check
Ability to regain energy startling at times..................: Check
Rate of climb high hinting at solid thrust-to-weight ratio: Check
Quick roll rate...................................................: Check
Fuel reserves impressive.......................................: Check

That low speed pass though!

Other than the road noise that's one of the better ambient sound videos. Impressive launch, be nice with no cloud and just zoom climb to 10k ft or so.

I thought the clouds were perfect. Great for framing the relative motion.

WOW, insane indeed!

I guess that UFO sighting reports will grow exponentially in the next months or even years

Am I the only one who noticed the refersal lasts 18 minutes which is 3 times as long as normal demo, and that means the jet was carrying much more fuel than what a normal demo required, and still performing all these maneuvers?

You may well know the F-35A is rated to 9G with full internal fuel and weapons and Mach 1.6 top speed - any questions?
