I just watched a video on Youtube that's supposed to be a crew chief launching an F-16. I thought it was very weird, but it's been a good 35 years since I launched one of these jets and I suppose things could change in that much time. The weirdest part was the way he pulled the chocks, by himself, and then handed them to his assistant, then went out in front of the airplane and gave the "chocks out" hand sign.

Anybody want to watch it and comment? Is this proper procedure now, or what is it? Transient alert in some part of Pakistan or something? I don't know. I posted a comment there and then I began to wonder.

The assistant looks to be wearing a flight suit - so I'm thinking he is another pilot that was watching - thus why he's not involved.

Been awhile - retired 2006 - but I'm guessing with manpower shortages, this may be the new standard....single man launches.

It's not a new concept - we've all done it at some point in our careers.

I thought it was pretty good - if there was a "scratch n sniff" option for me to smell the JFS exhaust it would have been perfect!

I started to see this in 2003 or 2004 in Aviano AB. We no longer had a "b man" , fire guard or "assistant".
You can see a camera in a tripod at 3:21, the guys walking with the flight suite probably a pilot escorting public affairs out there to record the launch. It could be why the crew chief was wearing a camera to begin with.

A bit unrelated to the actual launch, but I am wondering what those semi-open doors on the inlet are. One on each side right next to the latch doors where the intecom cable and power cable goes on the R/H side. We don't have these doors on Norwegian F-16s (Block 1 through 15)

Well, been 23 years since I touched one - I recall them being called Auxilliary Air Doors? Block 40/42 and beyond.

Allows additional cubic feet of air to enter the nacelle spaces of the air frame when engine operating on the ground. Suction created by nacelle ejectors out the back.

In flight the air the flow is so high thru the ram air inlets that they stay popped out and flush.

ECS blow-in doors. Not part of the nacelle ejectors AFAIK, part of the ECS.
