Can someone tell me the scheduled inspection and replacement of dirty socks? Does it only happen at phase inspections? Seems this item frequently causes acrid odors in the cockpit and dirty socks also contribute to excessive canopy fogging during defog operation. Thanks.

Really? Every time?

During ground checks, the pilot will run the Flight Control built in test. (FLCS BIT). During this time the ECS ground ejector valve will close and the there is a slight temperature rise across the ECS heat exchanger. If at this time, the ECS Coalescer sock is wet & dirty it will release pungent fumes that may enter the cockpit. Symptoms are, the smoke is greyish white and has a burning effect on the eyes and has a bad odour.
The pilot needs to go on 100% oxygen and stop the BIT check. Maintenance needs to replace it before next flight.
This usually occurs on the 2 seater and with locations in a high humidity region. This hardly occurs in a very dry region.
If you are operating in a humid region, change the replacement schedule to be earlier than what is stipulated in the -6.
