Army releases RFP for MPF (Mobile Protected Firepower)

If you feel you absolutely must talk about cars, morality, or anything else not related to the F-16, do it here.

So does the army really need a "Light Tank" / "Assault Gun"?

Wasn't the Stryker MGS designed for that role?

What's wrong with the Stryker MGS?

XanderCrews, your opinion would be highly valued here.

Stryker can't handle the big guns very well.

MGS is for the Stryker brigades. This thing is for the infantry brigades.

Sounds like the M-8 AGS, that was cancelled in the 90s, that was supposed to go to all the light infantry divisions.

It should as a modernized M-8 is BAE's entry. ;)

Isn't that why the 105mm with an Auto Loader is good enough for that purpose?

The M1128 MGS was "indefinitely deferred" in 2012. It's most likely defunct.

From what I've read the chassis was too high and light to handle the stress of the 105mm. That's why it was discontinued and now they're going with the 30mm.

Edit: I should add my sources weren't the manufacturer so...

- Remote turret, 200 rpm out to 3,000m, and dual feed

"The cannon dual feeds ammunition with;
- multi-purpose fuse that provides AirBurst effects (AB), Point Detonate Delay (PDD), and Point Detonate (PD) in one warhead.
- It can also provide optimized effects against light armored vehicles, with the Kinetic Energy (KE) penetrator"

- + 9 man Infantry squad

- compatible with Bradley 30mm upgrade

:)

Just in case it wasn't clear in zerion's post the Dragoon (30mm) Stryker fills a completely different role than the MGS.

8Dec17

(X)M1296 Infantry Carrier Vehicle – Dragoon (ICVD/ 30mm) towing a 777 should be adequate for the 9 man squad riding in comfort inside!

https://breakingdefense.com/2016/10/arm ... -russians/

The upgrade from funding receipt to prototype delivery spanned a scant 15-months and included design, build and integration of a Kongsberg MCT-30mm Weapon System, remotely operated, unmanned turret, a new fully integrated Commander’s Station, upgraded driveline componentry and hull modifications.

The upgraded Stryker vehicle will be known as the, Dragoon, the name of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, and we recently assigned the nomenclature XM1296 Infantry Carrier Vehicle – Dragoon.

The prototype vehicles will begin a series of industry “shakedown” testing prior to industry contractually delivering the vehicles to the Army in December (8Dec17). Government testing on the platforms begins in January 2017(8?).

"Dragoons will be equipped with the platform to conduct an End User Test and Evaluation (EUTE) at Hohenfels Training Area in April 2018. Following this, fielding will begin with 1st Squadron, 2CR receiving the ICVD at Bemowo Piskie Training Area during their NATO Enhanced Forward Presence rotation. "
:)

...IMHO all ICV Strykers (<4,500) could be retrofitted with the 30mm (compatible with the 30mm upgraded Bradley)

..sadly!, may be the end of the "Ma-Deuce"
:salute:

The MGS isn't "defunct". They produced as many as they needed to equip the Stryker Brigades they have. Since this is a very niche vehicle, the total number is small (10-12 per Brigade).

30mm Stryker isn't an alternative or substitute to MGS. It doesn't serve the same function. It's basically trying to convert the Stryker from an APC to an IFV.

"The US Army bought 142 Mobile Gun Systems in total; three were lost in combat. A three-vehicle MGS platoon operates organic to a Stryker infantry company, with one MGS (three man) in support to a Stryker infantry platoon."
