New F35 strike fighters coming to Nellis Air Force Base

August 23, 2004 (by Lieven Dewitte) - About five years from now, Nellis Air Force Base will add a new strike fighter to its current fleet of fighters and bombers.
If everything comes together according to plan, 36 of the nation's F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jets will be delivered to the base in Nevada between 2009 and 2028.

The 36 tactical fighter jets coming to Nellis will be used to train instructor pilots and support the Air Force Weapons School's mission of testing and evaluating state-of-the-art weapons systems and future combat capabilities.

The F-35s destined for Nellis will be some of the first off the assembly lines. They each have a price tag of about $40 million.

Construction of new hangars and workshops at Nellis, to accommodate the F-35s, will begin in 2007 and last for three years.

Nellis has currently eight F/A-22 Raptors and is expected to receive nine more in the next five or six years.
