Thailand, U.S. agree on F-16s deal

March 12, 2000 (by Lieven Dewitte) - The Thai military and the U.S. government have reached an agreement on the formers purchase of 16 used F-16 jet fighters from the latter.
The U.S. Congress endorsed the deal on March 6 while the Thai cabinet is expected to approve the purchase of the 16 used F-16 jets soon. An official answer to Washington should be made by mid March, it added.

The new squadron of aircraft would be upgraded and the Thai Air Force would be able to use them for another 20 years.

The Thai government now reportedly has enough funds for the procurement, the cost down to 130 million U.S. dollars, a level which can be covered by the government budget, it noted.
