First combat success for F-16MLU

March 24, 1999 (by Lieven Dewitte) - Yesterday, a Dutch F-16AM (J-063) shot down a Serbian MiG-29 over former Yugoslavia. This is the first combat success for Dutch F16's and it is also the first combat success for the new MLU version of the F16.
The MiG-29 was in a flight of three and was heading toward a flight of four Dutch F16MLU's (Mid Life Update) that were escorting attack planes. The MiG's were first detected by an AWACS and shortly hereafter by one of the F16's. That F16 then fired an AIM-120B AMRAAM missile which hit home. The kill was confirmed by the AWACS and theF16 is now wearing an MiG-29 kill marking on the fuselage.
