Israel plans to acquire BLU-109 "Bunker Busters" bombs

September 22, 2004 (by Stefaan Vanhastel) - The US is considering to sell Israel 500 BLU-109 "Bunker Buster" warheads, as part of a $319 million package of air-launched bombs. The weapons would be used on Israel's F-16 and F-15 fleet.
The BLU-109 is a 2,000lbs warhead that can be used in combination with a GPS guidance kit (GBU-31 JDAM), and can penetrate up to 15 feet of fortified concrete. Israel's main reason for purchasing these weapons are Iran's nuclear facilities, some of which include large underground complexes.

The decision to sell is likely to be postponed until after the November 2004 US elections.
