| I THINK that's an AIS pod, used with ACMI equipped ranges to record and debrief after training sorties. |

Fighters carry these during DACT engagements. They can record the telemetry from the entire engagement from beginning to "Knock it off!". As Guy said, the data is then used to debrief the engagement. AF calls it ACMI, for "Air Combat Maneuvering Instrumentation".
IIRC, the Navy has a system called TACTS, though I don't recall the meaning of the acronym. "Hi we're the U.S. Navy, so we have to be similar, but different from you, just because we want to be." I think that's what TACTS stands for. |

| I saw this special one time on the history channel with the guys at Red Flag. Those ACMI pod actually show their position in the war room. A-10s, 15's, and 16's. A good way for them to see when they are out of the "playing field". Some cool stuff. |

Look at this, Post 2300!
No, Stoli, "Lawn Dart" is what's carrying it!
I actually lied about the ACMI pod thing. It's really a Flux Capacitor!

TACTS is the Tactical Aircrew Combat Training System which is now tied into CAPAS or Computer-Aided Performance Assessment System |

Do they still use the little 3D "X" on the display that comes up around the aircraft symbol when someone gets "killed"? They used to call it the "coffin".
regards
BTW, what we need are a few more aviation acronyms.
(And actually TC the Navy had it first.) |

The little things we learn on this site. Very interesting. Then again, it would make sense, as the Navy got TOPGUN up and going before the AF got serious about having a similar training system.
To answer your question, yes, they still have "The Coffin", clearly indicating the "kills". |
