Does anybody know the story on these pictures?

In the first picture note the Sidewinder skipping across the deck behind the running sailor!

It came off the rail when the Bug hit the cable.

So, it wouldn`t have been armed but a 9 foot 190 pound heat seeker shooting across the deck would have made me run very quickly too. It`s funny how the thing just goes straight and level!

Wonder who was more astonished, the pilot or that sailor! I wouldn`t think this is very common.

I wonder if the pilot started checking for pushed buttons.
(Don't explode Don't explode) flared the inner monologue. Shocked

So the Hornet landed and the 'winder came off the rail down the flight deck and in the sea ? I can only imagine the looks of the people later ! How old is that incident ?

This picture has been around for a long time. That Sidewinder is a real nice reef by now.

Yeah, I thought it was a very old picture. How much does a `winder cost? Probably cost more to fish it out of the drink! Anybody know exactly when it happened and on what carrier?

I would have paid good money to see the pilots face!!

I can't remember when it happened, but I seem to recall it happening on the U.S.S. Midway Smile .

I saw a video of this incident several years ago. The missile wasn't flying level -- it was skipping along the deck with small parts flying off as it banged against the surface. The crewman's probably running because he may not understand how the missile works and he's got contact fuzes on his mind.

Maybe he doesn't know how it works... But if 200lbs of rocket motor and explosive was ripping by me at 150knots you can be sure I'd be running in the other direction.

You know what they say: "You see a weapons loader running, you better keep up with him !" I think it's safe to say "You see a missile running, you better keep up with it...In the other direction !" Razz

(I'm not totally aware if weapons loader is the specialty, but you get the spirit I think Embarassed )

Running would be a good choice. I was in the hospital in the Phillipines for a short time in 1966. While I was there, I met a fellow who had some arm burns due to a Sidewinder that gotten loose on the flight line. I think it had happened in Korat, Thailand
