The reason fuel fraction was kept relatively low by today's standard is the same reason for all of them in that era, because they didn't have fancy plumbing to move fuel around automatically. Add in today's smarter engineering - lighter materials, better skins, better glass, better engines, etc. - the Lightning design would crush its old records.

I recall an article in a British air mag concerning Harrier war games against Italian 104s in the Med. According to the Harrier pilots the combat wasn't very challenging provided that you could pick up the Italians early enough on radar. The turn radius of the 104 was very poor once they reached their high energy state so it was just a matter of scooting the Harriers out of their way and then curling in to have a shot at their flames of their tailpipes as they were trying to depart the area. A case of ultra energy fighters vs ultra angles fighter in a heat seeking missile era.

You can't dispute the looks of a starfighter however, very simple and purposeful.
