I've got an old time friend who's a Lt. Col. and is in charge of the 'salvage yard' at Nellis. During the airshow we chided him for not getting us some parts when he got his new command and said a seat would be nice. He remarked that he'd already had one and had a guy throw it away because he didn't know what to do with it
We, of course, said if he gets his hands on another one call us anyday anytime anyhow and we will drag it home with rope if we have to. Well, he's got one and is trying to figure out the legalities of releasing it to civvies. Is there a form to fill out? Are there butts to kiss? Anybody know the skinny on how we can grease this thing out of the gate and into my garage? |

Only completely legal way to get one is through DRMO. If it's already there, you can claim it for your organization after completing the proper paperwork. That way you could have it around the shop or in the squadron bar (do we still have those?) but it is still USAF property.
Even if it is sold as scrap chances are that it would have to be "de-mil'd" and certified as such; this generally involves cutting and crushing operations, however. I am no DRMO expert, but in my USAF days I got some stuff from DRMO (including a complete throttle quadrant, which we fixed and kept in our scrounge at Shaw AFB for years).
The de-militarization is the sticking point, I think, otherwise you could just sign the thing out on a long-term hand receipt!
Best Regards, |
