Ok, I am not a pilot. I'm just an aviation nut. I am well aware that all you pilots out there study dogfights from the past. I was just curious which dogfight is your favorite. And please give the story. I only know (unfortunately) dogfights from the show with the same name. I know you guys must have better stories though.
My personal favorite is Dick Schaffert in an F-8 Crusader taking on 4 Mig-17's without ammo and surviving. Anyway, what about you guys? |

| Saburo Sakai's battle against Hellcats in June of 1944 is a good one. Badly outnumbered, Sakai evaded numerous Hellcats while trying to escape. Making things more difficult was that he was blind in one eye (left I think). I think Martin Caiden recounted the story in a book about the Zero. |

"The Bloodiest Day", "Mig Killers of Midway", "Operation Bolo", "Hell over Hanoi" all brought back memories of old (at least they are now) friends and fellow shooters of long, long, ago. Then there was the tragic loss of Bob Lodge, and the unbelieveable maneuvering of Mugs (a Navy Jock) at low altitude that we were never taught in the Air Force. Also met some great Navy Jocks who shared the same acre of sky (Seacow, CAG, and a few more
All great stories and a bunch more that are still untold and will probably remain that way since the History Channel has decided to cater to reality instead of history by those who made it.

| Snake, I have a feeling that your favorite was the one where you lived to tell your side of the story! |

HOWDY TC!!!!
Been awhile and a half!!!
In answer to yours above, ours was busy but not half as great as some of the ones I've previously posted in the air to air thread. Building a MIG sandwich, and a double rats-a$$ snatch back during hunter killer operations are two of the greatest I know of from our wing. Great crews every one!!!!!!

I always thought a good one was when Ritchie and DeBellevue got 2 within the span of 39 seconds. WOW!
Ben "Coma" Powell and Jay "Opie" Denney, two Eagle drivers I know getting 2 a piece on the same mission in ODS.
and Cesar "Rico" Rodriguez causing a Fulcrum to turn into the dirt...one of two he had in ODS, and the first of his three career kills (added another in OAF). |

I think the MIG sandwich beats that as they didn't fire a shot. Take a read.

Where can we read of this MiG Sandwich??? !!!
Show me humbled by stories of missions flown rather than missions watched on TV. |

Go to Air Tactics in Vietnam, page 4, half way down in answer to Lieven's question.

Whereas my Dad was a Tuskegee Airman, I was real happy to see that segment.

Yes, Saburo was outnumbered 13:1. An outstanding bit of flying because by then most all combat pilots in the Navy were very experienced.
I would like to see the two encounters between the US Navy F-14A's and Libyian fighters, Aug. 19, 1981 and Jan. 04, 1989 illustrated. Plus, the encounter between Lt. Duke Cunningham and Col. Tomb (or who ever?) on May 10, 1972. It would be nice to see these illustrated, I think it could go a long ways in helping air combat enthusiast understand what is happening.

They have already done the Cunningham/Tomb duel. But I agree, I really want to see the Tomcats. Then again, some F-16 action wouldn't be a bad idea either.
Anyone have a good F-16 fight you want to talk about? Way back when we had an Isreali Major come give us a "Warrior Briefing" (remember those from the 80's?) He had a few F-16 kills to talk about. |
