"Stay" (in the engagement) and support the weapon through the time of flight - much more of a decision when launching a semi-active weapon like a AIM-7 Sparrow.
"Leave" the engagement and abandon the in flight weapon.
My guess.
While I'm talking Sparrow terms, maybe non-heat seekers need support by the host A/C through the initial part of the engagement.
