There was an interesting article in Flight International's on-line edition, regarding plans being developed to develop new AESA radar options for the F-16 also posted on this site as Raytheon and Northrop Grumman battle over F-16 radars
According to the article, Northrop Grumman is now developing a new, lightweight AESA radar that could replace existing APG-68 radars in the F-16.
Northrop, we might recall, also produced the APG-80 Agile Beam radar for the UAE's F-16E/F fleet. However, the APG-80 has greater power and cooling requirements than the APG-68 - making it impossible to directly substitute the new radar into existing F-16s. Northrop is therefore developing an alternative radar that could be directly added to existing Block 40/42/50/52 Vipers.
It appears that this effort has gained new momentum, now that Raytheon has announced their intention to deveop a down-sized model of the APG-79 (the Raytheon Next Generation Radar), suitable for smaller, F-16-sized applications.
It sounds like people are slowly coming to the realization that there are a lot of F-16s out there, and they are going to be flying for a long time to come. |

An AESA radar upgrade on the F-16 is extremely un-likely and the killer is no-Money.....
