Sometime during the month of April 2004 an Belgian Air Component F-16 made a crash-landing during a NVG training mission at NAF El Centro. The aircraft involved was FA60?
The following information is known at this moment :
"When attending Night Vision Goggle/Targeting Pod-training in El Centro (USA) the pilot had a crash-landing. While landing, the FA-60 broke his left landing gear. After a short time, the nose wheel also collapsed and the plane stopped next to the runway. The pilot stayed cool and remained in his cockpit. The FA-60 was planned to be stored at Weelde this year, so it will probably not be repaired."
Does anybody out there have more information (the exact date for example) on this mishap ?
Thank you in advance for you reply.
Best regards,
Laurent |

It was on April 23, according to the reports in Air Forces Monthly.
I'll be curious to see where that plane goes and what happens to it next. Is it worth while to
haul it back to Belgium just to mothball it?

It is definitely not on the 23rd, I got my info from the inside, it was somewhere in the night of 15-16 April, 99,99% sure. |

| There was a note on this incident in the latest issue of Combat Aircraft, in their loss/mishap section. I don't have my issue with me, I'll try to remember to look at it tonight. |

from Combat Aircraft, Vol 6 #1, p.16:
Quote:
A Belgian AF F-16A was severely damaged upon landing at NAF El Centro, CA, on April 23, after the left main landing gear strut broke. Serial FA-60 continued down the runway until the nose gear collapsed. The pilot was uninjured.
I have no idea who Combat Aircraft uses for a source, just relaying what they published. |

It don't know where they got that info, but the 31 sqn and the 1 sqn only were at El Centro from the 1st until the 16th of April. And I got 2 sources saying it happened somewhere in the night of 15-16.
I just mailed a source, he's an F-16 pilot of the same sqn as the pilot who crash landed the FA-60. He also went to El Centro, so he'll know the correct date. I'll post it on here as soon as I get an answer. |
