What's a "Spouse Taxi"?

They pop someone's significant other in the family model and taxi around. Sometimes they race down the runway then mash the brakes to make it even more "exciting".

It's suppose to help the spouse get a better understanding of what you do as they go through some life support training, egress, training a couple of briefings and then jump in the back seat. They get to see the start taxi and shutdown procedures and how we interface with the crew chief, and how we talk with ground and tower. Most times we get them to make a radio call or two and then get out on the runway for run up and brake release light the wick and then abort at about 100 kts. So they get the feel of the AB light, usually we'll get into a aerobrake for them too.

Yeah, thats what they do at Langley too.

It's usually the officers wives who get the ride. I don't know how many I have had to launch out. I have never seen or heard of a mechanics wife getting to ride.

Without sounding flippant, The spouse taxi program is for the pilots wives/spouses. It's not intended for every spouse in the military. It's the closest thing we can do for them so that they get some idea of what we do. Since we can't legally fly them this is the next best thing.

My wife has gotten an incentive RIDE and about 3-5 taxis from what I remember. The last three units I've been in it has been mostly maintenance spouses showing up to these events.

I dont mind giving spouses taxi rides after all the BS they have to put up with its a small inconvience for us on a friday. What I hate is when Dudes who have never stepped foot on the line get rides, That burns me to no end. IMOP You should take care of the people who make the jets fly before some non-er from Wing HQ or the fitness center gets one, Yep a few months ago the towel boy form the fitness center got a ride, Ce airman of the quarter. And we got guys who have won the Marquez award who have only sniffed the backseat while looking for FOD

At Luke it's typically around 50/50 between ops/MX spouses getting the rides. They do it towards the end of each B Course, so the student's spouses get first dibs. Usually it's a 7x7x7, and often only a couple D-models are needed in the third go due to lack of participation.

They're capped at 70 knots on the runway, so it's just a half-second or so of burner before they throttle back.

The longer you spend in the military, and the higher you rise in rank, the more you'll realize it's more than maintenance keeping jets in the air.

Maintainers bitch about all the other units on base, and we know we're working at 0200 long after the last nonner has gone to sleep. But how well would you do your job if you had no tools, or no money to buy tools, or if you had an impacted molar that hurt so bad you couldn't concentrate? We're all pieces of the same pie. Believe me, most of the support people on base envy our privilege of climbing all over combat aircraft every day without even thinking about it. Services are the people who professionally provide us with the things we brag about when we're around people from the other branches.

It's fine to feel superior to people who work elsewhere on base if it makes you happy. When you put on a few more stripes, you'll realize there's a life outside the ECP.

if A1378 is who i think it is, i dont think youll have to worry about him putting much more stripes on. hes been around the block a time or 2.

I don't have a problem with wives/NSP (non sortie producing) people getting taxi rides. I just hate when they come back with HOT brakes and blown out thermal plugs...Generates allot of inspections IAW the -6, not to mention the CSD thermal DISCO because of the lack of fuel in the AC....way too much work on a Friday nght!!!!
